plastic on plastic knock/rattle from back seat area?

Over the past month or so, I have noticed with greater frequency, a "rattle" or noise that comes from what sounds like the back seat area of my '06 coupe. It's almost like when the car flexes by going over un-even areas of the road or slight bumps, it sounds like plastic hitting plastic. It doesn't have any sort of metallic sound to it (but I guess I wouldn't rule that out).

I have pressed the roof area, the area by the speakers, released the back seat to move them forward, sat in the seat, pressed the rear window... anything I can think of, but I can't duplicate this sound I am hearing. Ive played with the seat belts, the center console thing in the rear seats....

I know this is a needle in the haystack, but maybe you guys can at least help me think of something else it can be?

I appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you.

its the rear deck and the glass in the rear. I have the same issue but i don't have time to track it down. Does it sound like its coming for the driver rear side?

It's most likely the rear deck. To really fix it I think you have to strip the back and take the rear deck out and reinstall. I didn't want to go through the hassle so I just jammed some insulation material in through the hole where the car seat anchors are. Seemed to keep the rattle down a bit. If that fails just get an exhaust and you wont hear it anymore.

I can't tell, but it almost sounds like its the passenger side for me. It does sound like you might be close in area though for the sound I am hearing. It does sound like it comes from the rear deck/glass area.

check and see if the tools for changing your tires is bouncing around in the plastic holder on the right rear.

Mine makes a loud popping sound, like Spinna said I'm pretty sure its the rear window. One of these days I think its going to fly off while on the highway.

You didn't mention it but did you check all of the plastic panels as well?

I did push on the inside of the roof and the sides of the back (side panels where the seat belt comes out from) and I was not able to duplicate the noise to determine where it is coming from. I've pushed on the window where the center rear light is and I think it might be around that area, but again, I can't duplicate the sound. If it is coming from the window, I guess I am SOL as i don't think there is anything you can do to prevent whatever movement it is making that creates that noise.

Not to bump a super old thread but I'm in the same boat as you. I have the same exact problem. If I can't find a recall for it ill probably venture down that road this weekend. I think it is going to be a long project since I have reclining rear seats. I will let you know what I can figure out and I will take pictures. there is a sticky thread called interior rattle exorcism or something that gives some guidance

I am glad you bumped it. I have yet to find a fix, or where it is coming from. I literally emptied out my trunk (spare tire, tools, any anything else that came loose, moved the seat forward and had someone else drive while I lay in the back and I still couldn't find where the sound was coming from. i really hope you are able to isolate the cause of yours.

hey guys I had the same problem mine started after I changed the exhaust on the car but it would only happen under hard driving, so it didn't bug me that much. I couldn't find where it was from, so one day i had my kid brother go in the back seat as i drove around and he found that it was coming from the passenger side back window. He just pushed in the back plastic around the window till he found the right spot then he just put in one of my detailing towels I had in the back seat, and that fixed the problem there is a thin gap between the window and the plastic trim.

i had something like that, i'm not sure if i have the same problem as you guys, but it was coming from the hook where the rear seats hook on to the latch, i just put little foam tape on the latch and fix the noise

I had a similar noise, there's an easy check to see if it's the same one I had. Open your trunk lid, then take your fist and lightly pound on the middle bottom of the outside rear windshield. If you hear the noise then follow these steps:

Take the 8 plastic clips off the rear trunk upper lining.
Pull the liner down (there will be some double sided tape holding it up).
Look at the white plastic clip in the center of the rear deck from underneath. This is what was causing my rattle (it actually sounded to me like a blown speaker at times, since i would hear it with the radio on).
Push up on this clip to put some tension on it, and hit the glass again. You shouldn't hear the sound anymore.
I jammed a couple layers of double sided foam tape under the white clip and then put the trunk liner back up. Haven't heard that noise since.

Hope this helps.

I had the same issue.

Mine turned out to be a plastic piece that was connected to my rear view mirror. It slides up and down against the glass and I was able to just move its position a little.

Drove me nuts.
