Mildew Smell from AC

Each day when I first turn my AC every day on the way to work, there is a strong mildew smell that comes from the AC for a minute or two. Is this normal? I've had the car for about a year and it's only started doing this in the past few weeks. The smell is pretty strong, easily noticable.

Thanks for any advice,
Nick

Try switching your AC off and turning your fresh air vents on about a minute or 2 before you turn off the car. Also see if your in cabin micro filter needs replacing. Hope this helps.

Re: Mildew Smell from AC

Hello,

While researching a problem with my Honda Accord, I learned that the condensation tray for the AC can have its drain tube clogged, which prevents water from freely flowing out of the car.

If the tray doesn't drain properly, water remains in the tray and mildew can grow. I don't know where the tray and drain tube are on the G35, but you may want to have this checked.

As a remedy, I've read a suggestion whereby you empty soemthing like half a can of Lysol through the AC's air intakes from the outside while running the AC full blast. Sounds crazy, but I read a few people say it worked. You can search for this info for yourself.

Good luck!
Carlin

Re: Mildew Smell from AC

There is an easy fix. You need to switch the AC to fresh air a few
minutes before you arrive at your destination. This allows the
AC to clear out any moisture in the system. If you leave your
AC on recirculate all the time, the AC starts emitting rotten-egg
smell. My wife has the same complaint with her 2000 Maxima.
We took it to Nissan and they told us to switch to fresh air
for a few minutes before turning off the car. However, my wife
still refuses to switch to fresh air because she complains about
the exhaust smell from other vehicles. It smells like rotten eggs
all the time. Every time I drive the car, I switch it to fresh and the
smell clears out. Go figure!

It's the drain thing, believe me, I have had that problem in another car, IMO that should be something you have checked at service from time to time!

From my G35 Haynes manual, p 3-12.

Check the evaporator housing drain tube for blockage; it's located behind the right (passenger's) inner fender-well splash shield.

They suggest inserting a piece of wire into the opening to clear blockage. I think that's what you're looking for.

I have the same problem with turning my AC on. It feels like the smell is pretty bad in the beginning, but as I crack my windows and drive for a mile or so, it goes away very minimally. It feels as if the smell still lingers. I'd like to think that it is the cabin filter located behind the glovebox?

I always have my AC/HEAT on Fresh Air Flow and still have a musty smell coming from the vents. I think it's that condensation try, but couldn't find it in the FSM. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

That's right. I had the same problem as I was using the recirculation all the time, and tried that out switching to fresh air after talking to Infiniti and the odor is gone.
