Hey guys,

I'm currently trying to install the demon eyes from AAC. I think I might want to paint the housing also but I have no idea where to start and what kind of materials to buy. Can anyone with experience let us know what stuff to buy (primer, paint, masking tape, etc.) so that I we can get an idea of what to get and how to do it? Thanks

 

If you contact them you can get your paint in a spray can at least they use to do it. If you search google you can find place that will put your paint code in a spray can for you.

that's the thing, what paint code do i need? I have a 03 DG Coupe 6MT. You think I should paint it DG or black? I see many people doing it black.....any other help guys?

 

What color is DG at the top of the page they have a find your paint code tab.

 

so all i need is to buy the paint from them and just paint the headlight housing? no prepping needed, i.e. primers, etc?

 

See my post, black would look the best, DG would almost be the stock color on the 03-05 headlights

 

Ok guys, so i finally took the plunge and painted my housing. i would just like to mention that i've never painted anything ever before so i think i personally did a not so good job because i don't know how much to put on. i'll start by showing you guys what i did so maybe you experts out there can chime in and let others know what i did wrong.

1.) Assuming you already know how to remove the housing from the lens, let's start from there. I took 400 grit sandpaper (bought it at Kragen's) and half dry sanded and wet sanded the housing. I sanded most of the paint off. NOTE: there are LOTS of grooves in the housing so make sure you kinda put your muscle into it. Here's a picture of the end result:



I guess it's supposed to look really hazy and stuff because all the chrome and the paint is coming off from the sanding. DUH!......anyways, here's a close up of what the housing looks like:



I hope I did this portion right. Experts, lemme me know if I did something wrong or if it looks kinda weird =).

2.) I had to mask off all the sections I didn't want to paint, i.e. the sides of the housing. But for this application, it doesn't really matter because the sides would be blocked by the lens cover anyways soooo.....regardless, I have a side view shot of the sections that were masked off:



3.) Now I want to start the fun part: PAINTING!!! This is the can of spray paint that I bought at Kragen's. I have no idea if this is good paint but red_lude said Duplicolor is reputable so I bought them. I hope this paint will stay on the housing. I'm kinda worried. Here's a picture of the can I got:



So i basically just followed the directions on the back of the can and just made quick passes about 6-10in away from the housing. I sprayed everything. So I have the end product after doing both housings. Tell me what you guys think. I hope this helps some people in painting their own housings =)

 

Should you have used a high temp paint??

 

I used duplicolor's wheel paint which is heat resistant, a high temp paint would have been a better choice, but hopefully the paint holds up okay. Why did you mask the perimeter of the headlight bezel?

i'll post pics today....it's all finished and the paint held when i baked the headlights for re-assembly.

i just hope it holds out in the future =)

When I painted mine I had the Sherwin Williams store match my oem black (KH3) into a couple spray cans. Also an adhesion promoter would be a good idea.
