Headlight replacement after accident

I have an '03 coupe and both my headlights were cracked in an accident. I'm having problems with the insurance company since I was struck primarily on one side and they don't think both headlights could have been damaged.

Anyway, instead of fighting with them I may just say forget it...since I can get a set of '06 projectors online for ~$500 and they are paying $600 for one stock headlight through the dealership.

I read through the forum and had just a couple questions left:

1. Are there pictures anywhere of unmodded '03-05 lights compared to unmodded '06...off and on?

2. I saw the thread for removing my headlights...what is involved with putting in the '06 projectors? Is it a simple swap or is more involved?

Thanks in advance for the help...hoping I can get this figured out today so I can let the body shop know what I'm going to do.

06 projectors are a direct swap; plug and play. You will use your current ballast off the 03 lights.

They are cracked...did you just need certain parts off them?

This may be a dumb question, but where is the ballast? Like...if the body shop already threw my old cracked light out...is that ballast long gone?

Sorry if I sound stupid...I can follow a DIY guide like a pro but know next to nothing about this stuff if I haven't already read about it.

^If they threw out your old headlights without taking out the ballast and ignitors, that might be a problem. '06+ headlights were around the $500 mark but I don't think they came with ballasts/ignitors at that price. Look to spend ~$200 on used ones. Bulbs are extras too.

The ballast is a metal square/hexagon looking part on the back of the headlight. It is held in with 3 small screws I believe...So if your body shop threw out your old headlights, youre ballast would be with it...

The body shop should have kept the ballast as the cost quote on the repair wouldn't have included replacing the ballast whether you were replacing the existing headlight units or upgrading to projectors.

if you buy some 06 headlights a lot of them dont come with either ballasts or ignitors. The ignitor is attached to the back of the bulb is it is metal and it has a yellow wire screwed down. Turn the ballast and it should make a noise which means its loose and you can just pull it off. Make sure you keep that yellow wire on the ignitor. The ballast is at the bottom of the housing and is in the shape of a circle. It is connected to the ignitor. Just swap both of those into the new housing.
