Hid question crazy idea i guess?

Now I would like to know will the bulb of the Q45, M45 or the Fx hid work for our car and will it give the car more brighter power?

A better question would be whether the 350Z projector HID's could be installed in the coupe. THAT would be cool.

The FX and Q have projectors. I don't know whether the current M45 does or not. Cars with projectors use D2S bulbs. G's and others that use reflector assemblies use D2R bulbs. The only differences are that the D2R has a ceramic coating on part of the bulb to help with a sharper cutoff and possibly to keep some yellow out of the output. D2R bulbs are also notched differently in the base where it hooks into the assembly. You can modify the base of a D2R and D2S to fit in the other's base quite easily.

D2R bulbs have less output in terms of lumens due to the ceramic coating.

I just put some ultinons in my coupe and experimented with the stock D2R bulbs. I scraped off the ceramic coating off the stock bulbs and re-installed them. This basically turned them into D2S bulbs. Output was better but the cutoff was a little more blurry. There was no additional glare otherwise though.

So if you get a bulb without the coating then you will get brighter lights?

Re: Hid question crazy idea i guess?

The stock bulbs in my '04 coupe are Philips D2R 85126+ which is their 5000K color match bulb. It's supposed to be whiter than most factory bulbs that are 4100-4300K. I was surprised to find those in there because my output was very yellow.

Therefore, if you're looking for more output, you might just try to scraping off the ceramic shielding off your existing bulbs and reinstalling them. You can do this very easily with an exacto knife or a new razor blade. This would be easier than getting a D2S bulb and modifying the base of the bulb so that it would fit in our assembly.

I went with the 6000K ultinons and while I like the color 10x better, the output is down in terms of lumens (intensity).

So, I guess if you are OK with the color, scrape the coating off your existing bulbs and use them. Again, the cutoff will be more blurry and you'll probably have to adjust your lights down slightly but the output is a little better.

The bulbs should get bluer over time. I'm surprised that you got the 5000K philips. I should check which Philips bulbs came with my 03.5 coupe. I scraped off the coating on my stock D2R bulbs a long time ago. Just use a good scalpel and some rubbing alcohol.

Re: Hid question crazy idea i guess?

Yeah, I don't know how the 350z projector beam pattern would look without the reflector base. I heard that the 350z pattern is more like a ECE reflector cutoff, meaning not quite as sharp as pure projector, but more defined then DOT reflector.

Ed, I'd go with ECE projector in the low beam if you can. The Q45 projector sounds like a good idea though.

Re: Hid question crazy idea i guess?

some aftermarket company is sure to come out with projectors headlight housings eventually. they must! well, they better... who would want those stinking 350z projectors. those dinky little things suck. and ive heard that its horrible to open up your headlights...really might mess them up bad.

Re: Hid question crazy idea i guess?

I am not aware of any mass produced aftermarket headlight that comes with true HID projectors. Again, mass produced, meaning not via retrofitters, and real HID projectors, meaning not APC headlights.

The reason is cost. OEM new projectors are a few hundred dollars. Are you going to pay over $1000 for a whole new headlight assembly with projectors? It's much more cost effective to pay $150, get some projectors off ebay, and put them in yourself.

If you know what you're doing, opening up the headlights isn't bad at all. I did my projector retrofit over 6 months ago, and the headlights are still perfect.
