My 3rd brake light recently went out. After doing some searching and removing the light, I realized replacing this LED assembly would be expensive (~200). I refuse to pay that much for a replacement light so I decided to come up with an alternative. In the end, I was able to integrate 4 red 12V bulbs into the existing LED housing. The new light is a little dimmer, but still very effective and enough to do the job. I have attached a few pictures. if anyone is interested in details, or wants me to modify their housing with new bulbs to save some money, let me know.

does anyone know how to disconnect the 3rd brake light? i just realized both the 3rd brake light and my spoiler lights up when i brake...

 

There are 2 screw/clips in the trunk just under the brake light. You need to first pop those out. Next, pull the back seat down. Last, pull the light assembly up and away and it will come off so that you can disconnect the harness.

 

where can you actually get a replacement for the 3rd brake light.
That light and the tail both have a few bulbs out
its an 04 coupe

 

I had the same problem n refused to pay 250 for it. so i searched n found this site http://www.infinitipartsusa.com/part...layCatalogid=0 cost me around 130 which is hella alot cheaper consider i cant pass my safety inspection without it.

 

honda8882 - Do you have part numbers for the bulbs and where did you buy them? Also can you post pics of how you did the wiring for the bulbs? Thanks!

Pull out the housing (simple) and replace the LEDs. I'll do it tomorrow and report back... I have 1 missing also.

I was able to get this done and I am no electrics engineer. I am sure someone can write a better DIY but basically I just got my entire brake light out first. Unscrewed the LED strip from the assembly. I think it ws just 2 screws. I posted a link above from my previous post which were the bulbs I ordered. I believe Phillips lumileds. At the time I spent a lot of time researching what to get and got those linked above. There are different reds and stuff, and these seemed the closest fit. I replaced one bulb and used a 12 volt battery and it shorted a few out or something. So I literally pulled every bulb out with needle nosed pliers. I drilled tiny holes into the metal so I could sort of slip the feet of my new bulbs in and I soldered, was not pretty but I just made sure the feet were on the correct (polarity) side of metal. The ones that are stock are snapped in, but these replacements have to be soldered. I didnt even bother testing again with the battery. Just went outside and plugged into the car and it has been working ever since (6 months?) Hope this gets you going Toma. It is not hard, worst case you can just order an assembly off people on this forum for under $100. My total cost was literally like less than $10 tho.
