Baking headlights

Hey all,

I've read a couple DIYs on headlights and baking/modifying them... but my question is...

Most people recommend baking for 15 minutes at 225. Well..... my oven will only do 350 or higher anyone think this would be too hot to bake them at? I was thinking put them in at this temp for about 8-10 minutes

I would try leaving the oven cracked open. It just needs to be warm enough to make the glue tacky but not so hot to begin deforming plastic.

And put a meat thermometer in the oven to monitor temp...?

I haven't done this operation yet, but seems risky at that kind of temp.

That's kinda what I was thinking... I have 2 pairs... the NASTY pair currently from the car... and a brand new OEM set. I was gonna experiment on the older ones. I've highly considered just paying someone to do it lol

Don't attempt to put them in if the oven only does 350 or more. Not worth the risk since at that temp its going to be really just melting the housing.

Yeah. You're running a big risk at those temps.

Is it a gas oven or something?

Don't put them in that hot. It will cause problems.

All the sets I have done, I do at 200 for ~15 min with AL foil around the front lens.

^Yep.

I wouldn't use a gas oven anyway. They can have hot spots and you could potentially melt the plastic in one part, even with the temp set to 225.

What a crappy oven.

Go to your parents house or to a buddies. Don't even screw around with your oven.

Damn! Sounds like it's back to the drawing board on this one. I remember there was a guy that modifies strictly sedan headlights on here somewhere... but I remember he was slightly expensive and I can't find his thread on here!

If you can't find a buddy w/ an oven (...that will allow you do use it for this purpose as it does stink up the house), try renting a heat gun.

I dunno, just an idea...i threw mine in the oven.
