Newbie with headlight question

Hi. We bought a 2006 G35 sedan a few months ago. A couple nights ago I noticed that
the drivers side low beam was out. Took it to a Nissan dealership today.....they
looked at it and said there was power to the igniter, but it didn't seem to be working.

They didn't therefore know if my bulb was good or not. So, it might or might not be.

After they quoted me a price of around $750 to replace bulb and igniter, I politely
declined and left after paying $60 for their time to check it out.

In reading some previous posts regarding headlights, I saw talk about bulbs but not
the "ignitors". There was also mention of "ballasts". Are "ignitors" and "ballasts"
the same item, or two separate and distinct things?

Are igniters used only on the xenon (high intensity) low beams......or on the
hi beam/fog lites also?

Is there a part number or model number for said igniter - so I can shop for one on
ebay or elsewhere?

I also noticed there seem to be different power ratings for bulbs and wonder which
I need for the 2006 model. I believe a HID-D2S was mentioned.....is that correct
for an 06, and what power would it be?

Sorry for all the questions, but I will appreciate any help given.

We live in Joplin, MO - site of the big tornado last May. Bought the G35 as the
tornado zapped the wife's PT Cruiser. She wanted a good looking vehicle, and
chose the Infiniti. It runs good and is fun to drive.

Thanks again,

Bob T

Bob , I don't know if this helps but I just replaced my HID bulbs with OEM HID bulbs I found on Ebay. The dealer was quoting me $200 per bulb plus $140 install cost. I found OEM HID Sylvania bulbs on Ebay for $124.00 for the PAIR and installed them myself. So I saved about $415.00!

I have a 2005 G35 (5000K HID D2Rs is what I needed).

The dealer claims you have to drop the bumper, but I went in thru the wheel well. I left the tires on the car, just turned the wheel to access and remove the front wheel well covers. Then removed the upper back cover of the light, removed the ballast cover, lifted the clip, pulled out the light and replaced.

The hardest part was reclipping the bulb. I just needed to be sure the bulb was seated properly. Took me about 1 hour per side (that included getting tools and washing up) so not too bad. Just VERY messy.

Words of warning! (#1) Be sure lights are OFF to avoid electrocution. You can disconnect the battery to be safe but I left mine connect, just checked to be sure ignition was off and light switch was turned off. (#2) Don't touch the HID bulbs with your fingers. The oils from your skin can ruin the bulbs and cause them to fail once lit. Solution? Wear plastic gloves.

If I can help you with links or how-to help, give me a shout.

yup, any ebay or vendor from this site can sell you a replacement bulbs with same OEM color or of your choosing for like $30-50 shipped. If you want name brand, i guess the sylvania is a good option, but i'd prefer to buy 3 sets of generic bulbs to keep as spare over any name brand bulbs with the price difference. They'll work just as good as the $200 dealship bulb. Might as well replace both while you're at it, to avoid a mis-match in the color of the light output.
