Do you think its because you used an AT gauge in a MT that it doesnt display the right mileage? or it's simply a stored value?

I believe each individual gauge cluster stores the value. You'll see gauge sets all over Ebay that have various mileage amounts. Also if you upgrade to the Nismo gauge cluster you'll be reset to 0 miles.

I actually think it was a pretty crappy job. :D The pre-cut heat shrink makes it look all pretty. I needed to use more flux than I'm used to. My trusty Metcal might need a new tip.....

Do you know if the gauges are universal for the Sedan and Coupe? Meaning I can buy any gauge and not worry what body style it was from?

Thanks. I'm pretty sure that my gauge set came from a sedan as it says SNOW and AWD on it I think. Let me check on this before you quote me.

OH yeah - adding the lighted steering wheel buttons would be great. I was told it wasn't possible on this forum so I haven't tried it. I assume the power source for the buttons may be missing on our 03/04 wheels...but right now I'm a hopeful believer it can work :)

Someone already posted on the forums how to swap in the lighted buttons from an 05/06. Looks pretty easy to do.

Great job man. Yeah I noticed that when I got a cluster with 21k on it and my car as over 30k. I was about to make a post on this, its possible to buy a way higher mileage car then you think.

Thanks for the reminder, I've been meaning to do an update. Since the last time I installed the gauges I've purchased another set of gauges. This time the gauges are a set for a 6-speed and also I managed to get a set of connectors with flying leads so it will allow me to make the inline connector I wanted to make in the first place.

The 6-speed gauge set will get rid of the "service engine soon" light and "AT check" warning that I get because I've installed a set of AT gauges in my 6-speed coupe. The CAN type for an auto and manual coupe is different. It states in the service manual that auto is CAN Type 1 and manual is CAN type 2 or vice versa.

The mileage issue is a whole other story. It seems as though I cannot supply a false speed signal to the gauge set, tricking the gauges into thinking they are moving and clocking mileage to match the mileage on my car. Vehicle speed is actually derived from the VDC/TCS/ABS control unit and sent to the gauges in CAN format. There is no way that I can replicate the CAN format. The service manual does not go into detail with the VDC/TCS/ABS contol unit so I can't inject a false speed signal there either.

So at this point I will still install the 6-speed gauges and then go to the dealer to see if they can alter the mileage on the gauge set with a Consult-II.

you guys really like that gauge cluster of the 06? I hate the amber color, I wish it was white or blue. It looks cheap being amber

Aorbeta is the ONLY one that I know of that has successfully accomplished this cluster "switch".

He told me that he is selling (could be already sold at this juncture?) his coupe, but will still be around this site from time to time. I'm extremely sorry to see him go, as I would like to think we were getting to the "pretty good friends" point here on G35driver. Hopefully we can still keep in touch through this site; he's a great guy to know!

To the point above, Aorbeta was so KIND as to send me the cluster that he was able to "Frankenstein" together utilizing more than one cluster.

*If I was an EE or of the like (Electric Engineer); I could probably help you all out for this project. But, I can really only "show" the cluster and the wiring. Maybe by showing you the wires, we could see if someone could figure it out, but I highly doubt pictures are going to help move this project along to a "D.I.Y." like I would have liked.

I'll try and see what I can come up with.

Nice pics Wyatt. Shows the real differences between both cluster and housing designs and why they are not interchangeable. When are you going to pop the gauges in?? I see you ordered the plastic cover, I elected to leave it uncovered for maximum brightness :biggthumpup:

Hey accordfreak. Let me write up the connections in my next post. Sorry to leave you hanging on this.

Connector breakout
 

Here is my connector breakout that I used for the 03 to 05 conversion.

*Use this at your own discretion. I am not responsible if you decide to do this conversion and you #&%! your car up. These connections were derived from the 05 and 03 user manual*

The first column of this list is the 05 cluster wiring(pin #), the second column a description of the connection, the third the corresponding 03 cluster wiring(pin #)

You will note in the attachment that I have a ? beside the LIGHT + connection. I had to probe the wire harness for this connection and forgot to write down which pin # it was. Sorry about this, but anyone attempting this should have the ability to probe the wiring harness and locate that connection. I believe it is in the neighborhood of the LIGHT - connection, so somewhere around 31.

Let me know if there are any questions as I assume there will be more once people start trying this mod out.

What Wyatt's pictures show is that I've separated the housing from a set of 2003 gauges. I removed the electronics from the housing in the 2005 gauges, and installed the 2005 electronics into the 2003 housing. This is the middle set of gauges that Wyatt has taken a picture of. This way, the gauges will install into the 2003 "hood" using the same mounting points as the old gauges because it is using the same housing.

As for the wiring, I used a combination of a wiring harness from a 2005 and the desoldered connectors from a set of 2003 gauges. The main reason I did this is to retain the factory wiring harness when I wanted to return the car to stock. Hopefully Wyatt can take a picture of the harness that I supplied to him.

Yeah, I decided to *attempt* to get close to the original 2003 OEM look as possible (ie. make it look like nothing changed - other than the updated 'halo' gauges - in the car, to others viewpoint). I'm sure the added brightness is sweet looking, but I would have to continually "dust" the gauges (since I'm OCD about this car and it's neatness condition - HA!)

that document look great what looks very straight foward to do but I wonder if you can find the plugs. the plugs in the the 06 guage harness and a 03 guage harnes that plugs in to the plug

You need to purchase two things to accomplish the converter cable.

1)Used 03/04 cluster. You need this for the extra housing so you can keep yours intact, and also you need it for the connectors on the cluster that you can desolder.

2)Connectors that plug into 05/06 cluster. You can usually find these from salvage yards. I had to call around to a few places so they could actually snip these off the wrecked car that pulled the 05/06 cluster. If you find a cluster on ebay, get in touch with the person selling, they are usually a salvage yard selling the cluster and ask them to walk out to the car and snip off the connectors for you.

i really wanna do this as well. another question. is there any way to change the backlighting on the guage? because i dunno about yall, but i think the orange sucks, and i think a white and blue guage cluster would look a lot cleaner and more luxurious

A couple members have successfully changed the lighting from Amber to Blue and Blue/White combo.
