Hey Chris, I hear you about the mpg. This is my daily driver and I traded a VW TDI for this, so I was getting some serious mpg with the diesel.
I did some calculations and in my situation I am still coming out ahead when I take everything into account. My G35's monthly note is cheaper, gas is cheaper per gallon, my insurance actually dropped as we'll. Also even though my G has a satellite stereo installed it doesn't have the unit in the trunk, so I canxed one of my Sirius accounts as well. I have a Sirius stiletto portable unit that I will move from car to car.
When I crunched the real numbers together I am coming out ahead in my pocket book. Not to mention the best part, I love driving my G35, its soooo much more nicer than the Jetta.
As far as mpg, as per the on board 'puter, I average about 30.3 on a big part of my commute, which I can live with. My wife does we'll in her Lexus RX300 as we'll. She is hitting 33 mpg.
A lot of your mpg has to do with your driving style, obviously.

Yeah I try to leave it in cruise on longer drives...and i'll be in like 6th gear during city driving (if i can help it)..just to keep that much extra pressure off the engine..Hopefully I'm getting a raise in september (like my boss said i would)...and then i wont be so worried about gas anymore...i turn 25 also in august, so my insurance should go down..
