I'll be interested in seeing how this holds up in 6mths to a year. I know a guys that dyes interiors and the problem with dying and especially with a drastic change like you did is that if is gets a small scratch or something the original color shows through. Since you went from a darker black to the lighter red I would see this being a big problem as well.

They did a good job, but i'm not feeling the dead red color. But the stitching and the fit is perfect.

My first original order for my 335i coupe was white on red coral leather. It looks sweeet. Check the BMW forums, you'd be surprised at how classy it looks.

I'm thinking that it depends on the prep. The guy you know could've used a different product and method. I'm assuming that when you prep well, it's actually opening the pores, almost like sanding a top layer off so that the dye soaks through and goes beneath the surface. From his earlier post, he did say that...

Prep is important, but it doesn't change the fact that you're covering a dark color with a lighter one. The new color won't dye all the way through the leather. It will only dye the surface, so if you get a deep scratch the original color will show through.

The first post of the thread shows black carpet, dash, center console and door panels. That would be an awful lot of dying if it started as a tan interior. Plus it doesn't matter anyway because even if it was tan and the dye was scratched the light color would show as well. The point I was trying to make is that whe color changes are made like this they aren't really dying the leather. The process is more like paint. The surface is preped and then the new color is applied. It only changes the surface color and not the inner portion of the material. If it's done right it can look good and last for a long time, but there is always the chance that the color will scratch off and the original color will show through.
