Car Cover: Is This Corroded Clear Coat? WTF Is This?

Hey Guys,

I wanted to post this so you can all be aware or if you guys can identify what exactly is this - since none of my colleagues has seen this before.

In March 2017, I purchased a car cover from a company that operates out of Irvine, California. As of yesterday afternoon (i.e., Saturday), we got hit by a rain storm - here in Northern Virginia - that lasted for a brief 15 minutes in my area. Prior to the rain storm hitting us I had my car detailed on Friday as everyone knew it was going to rain. And of course after it rained, I immediately went outside to remove the car cover to inspect if anything seeped through - and if I needed to do any light touch ups with some Meguiars Ultimate Quik-Detailer; including, if I needed to detail my car again to remove contaminants. Well guess what? This is what happened, and this is what I noticed despite been informed by the company they offer protection under the following areas:

- 100% water proof with all weather protection.

- 100% UV and heat protection.

- 100% breathable non-abrasive material

- 100% snowproof

- 100% protection against basic dust

- and 100% protection from natural hazard.

Yet, as of yesterday afternoon I now have these paint oddities on the roof of my car as opposed to anywhere else. Like what the heck are these as I''ll be darned if I have to pay $5400+ for a new paint job (or an isolated paint job) as I'm now going after the company. That said, has anybody ever seen this before? I looked on other threads about clear coat issues, but this doesn't look "exactly like a clear coat issue" as the areas feel goose bumps when you're sexually aroused or some s***.

P.S. The car is an 04' Black Coupe.

What brand/name of car cover?

I had a similar incident with a colored car cover for my wife's Corvette where the color washed thru but didn't damage that paint. Could this be the result of "Acid Rain?" Did your cover appear to have damage of any kind? Have someone with a high speed buffer and fine cutter clean those area's shown! Spend a buck to save many...Gary

Hiy Gary,

The brand of the car cover is called AutoPartsMarket. Apparently it's from a credible (i.e., a 96.6% rating) company that specializes in car covers. Yet, here I am with this issue. The cover came in beige as opposed to a black cover. Could this be "Acid Rain?" That is what I assumed, however the locals out here have stated "Northern Virginia is not prone to Acid Rain" compared to areas like "The Blue Ridge Mountains" or areas away from the DC area. Whereas, in regard to the damage of the car cover? That answer is no as I routinely inspect it after each use.

And yeah, right now I am sending my pics to detail-body shops in the surrounding area to get a "price quote" and/or "an assessment." It's just crazy how an $95.38 car cover would fail like this. Anyway thanks for the quick response and have a Happy 4th of July Weekend.

Take off the cover, wash it if you haven't already, and see if that solves your problem next time.

Clearly you're an a**hole as much as I'm an a**hole from time to time, yet, unfortunately for you I'm no newb. What you are implying is just common sense. You always inspect the car cover and you always wash your car before using "said car cover." Like come on man are you serious?

Anyway, what ended up happening was when I had my car detailed Friday by one of those "Detail Specialist Who Come To Your House," apparently this guy ended up using "Rubbing Compound" vs. "Polish Compound" that ultimately stripped my roofs clear coat. And to make matters even more sh***y, his number is no longer a working number - as I can't tract him down. Thus, I'm either going to CF wrap the hood or Plasti Dip the entire car - since Virginia weather sucks a**; it's unpredictable; and to buy me some time (to save money) so I can fully repaint the car next year. Because as of right now I am not going to sale my engine mods to fix this.
