Unhappy check out my volk anodized rims

hey everyone,

i did a search and seems nooone has an answer yet..

i have a set of volk gt-7's. the outside lip i believe is anodized forged aluminum.. correct me if i am wrong.. it looks hazy (rainbow colored).. so i would like to repolish it.. i got quotes of around 250 per rim at local MA repair shops.. now my question is.. does anybody know if i am able to polish it myself? i know that i need to deanodize the metal first then polish.. does anybody know how to deanodize the metal?

thanks for your input

so i work in the aerospace industry and we do a lot of anodizing. In order to strip the anodizing you would have to do it chemically. I would check out for some shops that do metal processing, like chem film, powdercoating, anodizing, they would be able to strip off the anodize.

theres a clear coat on Volk rims, once this is removed, then the rim can be polished, and if needed and wanted, can be re-clearcoated, but with my experience with my volks, the clear coat did not finish the same, so i had the clear coat taken off and had one RAW rim..........but could not tell with the naked eye

I too can not get direct answer from forums, wheel repair shops or Makin to what their lips are or if they are cleared. I have a small chip and need it repaired.

I dont know whats on your wheels, youll definately want to double check it first. But the last time I deanodized something I used Easy Off Oven clear and it worked good. But idk with that clear coat.

I used Heavy duty oven cleaner to deanodize and polish the frame on my bike last year.
I used sand papers on one side of the frame to get rid of anodized surface and used the oven cleaner on the other side. And the result was,, it took about the same time and effort. If you use oven cleaner, it will leave some nasty stains that needs to be removed with sand papers. So either way you
gonna be doing some sanding and buffing.

I have the same problem you do on my wheels, i found a shop that im gonna take to soon thats going to powdercoat + repolish my lip. The powdercoating is 250ish (including take off tire and balancing them later) and another 200ish for the repolshing, something about there going to sandblast them and do it from a fresh start. he mentioned from then i had to repolish them myself with some kind of wax monthly. hope that helps

I am getting the lips on my Volks Chromed as we speak. They should be done any day (yeah, you know how that goes) they should have been done last Friday...

As Soon as I get them back I will be posting pics of how the Volks look w/ a Chrome lip... I have Gold Challenges and I think it is gonna come out hot, plus after that windex or any glass cleaner will shine them right up like new

Absolut, that rainbow color haziness is most likely from those spray-on wheel cleaner that's too strong for clear coated wheels. Plus never spay wheel cleaner on your wheels right after driving when they're still hot. Trust me, I learned the hard way years ago. Now I just use soap and water and just clean more often and put some wheel wax on to repel the dirt.

seems to be fairly common around here, just plain soap and water will work wonders.

that seems to be kinda pricey, but its a lot of work

Yep, Soap, a lot water and a couple coats of wheel wax works great for me.
