2004 g35 sedan saved from being junked 😁

Hi guys, total noob in the infiniti world but I'm here to get some insight and ideas for my new g35 sedan.

I'm a body work specialist/weekend mechanic and I came across a 2004 sedan that was hit pretty bad in the back and was about to be junked due to the owner not having insurance and not being able to pay to have it fixed, it's still got a clean title since it hit a containment wall buts got 185k on the clock now...

I gave 1000 for the car and it drives and does everything it should but it's wrecked in the trunk area, I managed to buy a rear clip from a 06 for 500 with lights and everything and I'm in the process of making one out of the 2 plus I've been buying some audio to put in the car.

Ps.

If this is not the correct place for this thread please let me know where to move it and I hope I get some insight and ideas for my build. Thanks a lot and appreciate the ideas you guys might have for me new little black beast.

That's what I've done so far so it's pretty much a blank canvas to go crazy with it... I'm doing a single quad coil 15" sub in the back with 4 6.5 soundstream pro audio 170rms for the doors, a single 8" soundstream pro audio 230rma where the bose sub used to be and 4 soundstream 1" titanium tweeters @110rms per pair and passive crossover... For amps I'm using a visonik 4000xd old school for the single 15" sub (concept csp-15 quad coil each coil 1000rms), for the 4 6.5's I'm using a re xt1600.2v2 which is one of the last decent re series, for the tweeters and the single 8" I'm using a re xtx500.5 and I might later on add some more mid speakers in the trunk but dunno yet, later on I'll add Picts of the sound goodies.

markc 10-28-2014 09:20 PM

Good on you to take on such a challenging project, but,,, I would strongly recommend not even thinking about audio until you get the body work and mechanical sorted out. It does have a lot of miles on it, so mechanical is also of a concern, not just body work/rebuilding. Audio would be the last thing I'd think about.

ScraggleRock 10-28-2014 11:04 PM

Yeah, pretty cool project you got there. Definitely something to be proud of once you're done.

Ralphy323 10-29-2014 07:40 AM

Thanks, the audio is going in after I fix everything but my main concern is the engine... What sort of preventive maintenance should I do to make sure I keep it running for a little longer ?? There's no check engine light, car starts and runs like a champ, burns out like crazy and sounds great but I'm not sure if the timing chain and other stuff need to be changed to keep it in good condition.

Urbanengineer 10-29-2014 12:30 PM

Damn... If hit a containment wall!?

Looks like a great deal is in progress. At 200K miles you are going to want to do the obvious fluid changes (EVERYTHING). Transmissions are ehh on these cars so only do a drain and fill over a few thousand mile interval. No tranny flushes. 04 manual sedans did not have an oil burning issue. Always advisable to keep an eye out.

Also I've never seen a rear clip floating like that so TIL...!

Keep us updated on the progress. I would avoid audio though as it will end up costing more than the value of the car for a kickass system :). I wonder if it would have been hell to replace the front clip on my old sedan now that I want back :(.

Ralphy323 10-29-2014 04:51 PM

A front clip is relatively easy on this cars as the radiator support is all plastic and pretty much bolts on. As far as audio I have a decent system it's not gonna win any db drags but it will sound nice.

Speakers are.

Looks like you're in balls deep. If you can take some pics of the reconstruction process, I'm sure it would be of interest to many including myself.

Ralphy323 10-30-2014 02:41 AM

Of course I will, it has slowed down quite a bit because I messed up my shoulder about a week ago and can't really use it much but hopefully Saturday I'll be able to do something with it... Once the chasis pulling machine is empty at the shop I'll put it right in and pull it.

Quick off topic note, would you guys be interested in a little write up on how to do molded fiber glass sub boxes?? I'm right now doing my friends pos (94 celica) and well I decided to fiberglass 2 sub boxes to maximize trunk space, if you guys are interested I can do a little write up just let me know.

Here are some Picts...

The Fixer 10-30-2014 08:15 PM

Looking good so far! Whereabouts in Jersey are you? Do you still have any parts left on that '06 that you cut up? I could use the weatherstripping from the left rear door if it's in good shape.

Ralphy323 10-30-2014 09:28 PM

I believe I still do have the weather strip and let me know if anyone is looking for a rear diff or brakes let me know.

Btw in in jersey city

Urbanengineer 10-30-2014 10:39 PM

Nice idea on the sub boxes. There is a company that made something called the 4080 box that was built with the ideal sub in mind for coupes and sedans. They are out of business though and there is a company, Zenclosures, that makes wood boxes (meh quality).

Nice idea on fiber glass.

Long story short I was hospitalized for a few days so no progress on the g for at least 3 days but yesterday we started working in it again, left quarter panel is straight just have to cut the part where the tail light mounts so I can weld the new one in place. As far as the right quarter panel goes everything is cutte out, chassis is pulled, the door almos closes normally etc... Here are some Picts.

The rear clip etc. I'll keep you guys posted.

saywat? 11-10-2014 06:57 PM

that's pretty nuts work.but I think it woulda been more worth it if the engine had less miles

Yes you are right but at the same time I'm only spending around 2000 including the parts and the car which is not that bad, that's the price of a beat up pos with no style or a honda.

As far as progress I completely dismantled the rear clip and now I'm working on having everything mocked up by Saturday or maybe even welded who knows.

Here are some Picts of yesterday's work.

Btw... Anyone needs a rear diff or brakes or any diff sensors?? I got stuff for sale including a back window.

And test fitting the new quarter panel and fine cutting.

Attachment 185889

Attachment 185894

Test fitting the trunk.
Attachment 185895

Attachment 185896

Attachment 185897

And that was pretty much all for today.. Believe it or not it took me the whole day from 10 am to 8 pm to get to this point and yes everything is being held by screws because it's not properly aligned. Next step is to have everything align properly including tail lights and everything and once I'm sure it all fits properly I'll move on to welding the whole thing. If you guys have any questions please feel free to ask them and if you have any suggestions don't keep them to urself!!

And as usuall... I'll keep you guys posted. 😁

Agreed. Who doesn't love a slow drive-by gawking at blood and guts? But you don't usually get the chance to watch the surgeon stitch them back together again. In for updates.

Well not
Much of an update but today I was getting all the kinks out of the trunk lid fitment and the door... I'm gonna need a new door and I hope it's coming in tomorrow morning... Here r some Picts of what I did today.

Attachment 185866

Attachment 185867

Attachment 185868

Attachment 185869

Not much of a diff in the Picts but the fitment is way better and also cut down the quarter panel a bit more to get the door to close properly but after closer inspection the door is bent out of shape so new door.

😑😑😑 my pocket
Does not like it.

saywat? 11-17-2014 06:20 PM

when u weld everything back how do u know that the back is straight with the front? like the aligment and body will be straight?

Thanks!! But if you look closely it's a regular body... I thought of making it a wide body but already have too much work as it is and well... I kinda like the sexy curves of the stock body however I'll be doing some
Mods later on once it's in a more advanced stage.

That's why I'm test fiting everything before welding because it will tell you if something is out of place and I also use a chassi pulling machine which gives me the measurements as I go but at the same time once you weld the metal expands and contracts creating movement in the parts, that's why after a few welds you double check and keep the temps and settings on the low side.

ok so big problem i was having with the left quarter panel is that it was too low... no matter how much i pulled and bent the chassis it was still too low and i had to go ti plan D... :icon43:

that involved cutting and manually moving the quater panel up... here the picts

first the line where we are gonna cut.
