Chicago Police Radar?
Chicago Police Radar?
Does anyone know what types of speed detection chicago police and surrounding suburbs use? (ie radar, lidar, laser etc?) I'm trying to decide which type of detector to get.
Re: Chicago Police Radar?
Heading south on Lake Shore Drive after work some days there is a Chicago cop with radar sitting on the shoulder (this was last summer/fall) but if I remember correctly it was K-band radar. I have rarely run into laser even in the suburbs, mostly K and Ka bands.

Yep, Lake Shore Drive and Chicago plus Lincolnwood, Skokie, Morton Grove, Niles, Evanston and most in suburbs use K band, however I've seen Ka band on several ocassions and NO LASER has been observed.

If your wondering what kind of radar detector you should get, get a Escort 8500 or a Valantine, i used my friends detector coming from Union Grove, Wisconsin, and the Escort detected cops from a mile away. The Escort is about 299 and the Valantine is about 350.....both do excellent work compared to like a Cobra. But you could never detect statey's in helis and airplanes that time you.

Re: Chicago Police Radar?
Ka is most common. Certain smaller communities/suburbs use laser extensively (richer communicites where there is too many tax dollars to waste). Also noticed that the state police will set up infrequent, select locations along the highway to use laser. Be prepared for all types in IL -- big revenue maker.
I have the V1, and will never go back. I have run into many multiple car traps with cops in front, back, and side using more than one type of rader/laser. Can't beat the arrows and just as important, the bogey counter. I also see slick undercovers in camaros and mustangs with laser and/or Ka band (your tax dollars hard at work). I have since sold my Passport 8500 -- just wouldn't do the job.

2k2maxima- great meeting you on Sat...hope you that dent is taken care of. The best radar out there is the Escort 8500. It beat the valentine which is more expensive in a recent study in one of my car magazines.
Re: Chicago Police Radar?
...the Valentine One is the way to go. It is more expensive than most detectors out there, but the extra $100 or so you shell out makes up for it very quickly with all the tickets it'll save you from.
I read the article about detectors (I think almost everyone has), and the only reason ther Escort 8500 "beat" the Valentine One is because it's $100 cheaper; in other words it's the best for overall value, but the article agreed that Valentine One is the best if $$ is not an issue.

Valentine might be slightly better but how much better? They are both good and if your going 120 and a cop sees you without gunning you....your still going to have to explain yourself why you shouldn't go to jail. If my dealer didn't throw it in when I bought the car, I would have never gotten one. I haven't gotten $300 worth of tickets in my lifetime. But I am glad I have it!
