Question

Hey,

First post here, and I've got a question for the owners out there who've bought used. I'm coming off lease here this quarter and I'm planning to buy an 04-05 G... will be a nice upgrade from my 06 Spec-V in my opinion... My question relates to buying an extended warranty in addition to the car.

I'm generally not a warranty guy, but this really is an expensive purchase that I'm intending to keep for several years as it's my first chance to buy a car that I actually want... What's the opinion on going with a warranty? The car seems to be rated rather well on CR and Edmund's, but I am curious as to whether or not there are common problems that end up costing big $$ to fix, more real world stuff, etc... thanks in advance!

I am not a warranty guy either but it may be a good idea. You have to take a lot of things into consideration like:
-cost of the car
-cost of the plan
-milage and year of the car
-what the plan covers
-how long you want to keep the car

If you plan on keeping the car for a short period of time than I wouldn't suggest it. If the plan doesn't cover anything important or things that are known to go wrong, i wouldn't suggest it either..hope this helps

Hum, I was dealing with the same issue when I bought mine. I had a fact warranty for about 2000 miles before I lost it (mileage). The only big thing I considered the warranty for was b/c of the oil consumption issue with some of the 05's. Mine is an 05 with the 6MT and REv-Up...all the criteria for the consumption issue. I have only had it for 3 months, and my warranty has since lapsed, but I have had no problems thus far *knocking on wood*. Search the threads for the oil consumption and see what you come up with. Other than that, I think the warranty might cost you more than the probs that *might* arise. I don't think the 04 or 06 has this problem. GL with your choice!

Thanks for the responses... The research I've been doing mainly has been in regard to the oil consumption issue, which I've read has been mostly with the '05's. If I did end up with an 05 I certainly might have a bit left on the factory warranty, which of course would help...

I generally don't buy warranties myself either, which I probably said earlier, but this is the first car I'm actually buying, and is something I've had my eye on for the past couple years and intend to drive for several. With all that in mind, I suppose it may answer the question for me in the affirmative, but it's going to be a tough choice for me I guess. It seems like the oil consumption is a "somewhat" rare condition with the 05 engines, as in 1 in several hundred or so, but with my luck I'd manage to find just that one I'm sure. Additionally, were I to service the car at an Infiniti dealer, which wouldn't be a requirement on an extended warranty I've been hearing, just the labor alone is triple digits per hour I believe, which would make a $50 deductible somewhat more palatable... Anyway, thanks for the responses, if anyone else reads this and wants to chime in, I welcome the advice.

Beware of the the date the 05 was manufactured. Sometimes that will sever your warranty before the mileage does. Just b/c it's an 05 model, it could have been manuf in late 04. Making 09 it's 5th year. Your best bet is when you find the car you are looking at, ask the warranty dept to run the VIN to find out EXACTLY how much warranty you have left time-wise.
Also, if it still has the warranty when you purchase, get the dealer to do the 1000 mile consumption test BEFORE the warranty lapses. I didn't know about this/nor did I have time when I bought mine before it ran out. Check my posts and I have started a thread about some months ago. One of the members was gracious enough to give me some info about it. Of course it was too late then though. lol.
GL to you! I still prefer the add'l perks of the 05 vs the 03 I test drove. Oh, and I would not BUDGE on the 6MT....HAD to have 4 doors and 6MT, lol. You won't be sorry.

Oh I gotcha on that one, as far as factory goes, it would be just a little bit of a bonus at this point since I'm going old enough that they'd be expired for the most part I think by now. Thanks as well, I will be sure to keep that in mind in any case, when the time comes, hopefully sooner rather than later at this point... All the research is frankly just making me more anxious and amped to get it, as if that should be any surprise. I'm jealous of all of you who already are lucky enough to be owners... It's gonna make work drag till I get the call telling me they've got something for me to look at.

I really want a 2-door, and my Spec-V is currently a 6MT, so that's what I'm looking for here. I know it isn't the same, but driving a stick has always been fun for me, so I intend to continue it if I can. Here's hoping that being friends with the guys at our hometown Nissan dealership will end up paying off...

My current concern is getting hit with wear and tear charges on my lease, it's got some wear of course, and I've been told by the dealers and heard from others that it's no big deal but I've heard horror stories and right now I just want it over with.
