G35 NYC Drivers
Hey,
I was in NYC again tonight and I really have to ask G35C NYC (or those who visit NYC in their G35C) drivers....how do you feel about taking your G in the city? I have the 18" wheels (came with the 6MT trans) and every time I go into NYC (on the week-ends), after I am back home in NJ, I cry. The roads in NYC are so so so crappy. I am always careful in NJ (where I live) for the potholes and road irregularities, but in NYC, there is just no avoiding them and they are so horrible. My G35C hits all these things really hard and I feel like it is so much abuse to the suspension and the wheels. I have never experienced a flat tire or a dented rim or anything like that, but it just feels so bad and I feel so sorry that I am giving my car this abuse. Is NYC driving bad for our G35C's with 18" wheels? Or does the suspension and wheels handle all the NYC crap okay? Just wanted to know how other guys in my same position feel about G35C (specifically 18" wheels) + NYC.

Just rent a car, that’s what I do when I go to somewhere unknown or more than 200 miles away from home. If the rentals gets in an accident or breaks down it’s the rental agency’s problem, and make sure you get the rental car insurance it’s like $15 to $25 more a day but it’s worth it, that way your insurance won’t go up if something happens to the car.

I live in NYC and yea the roads is shitty. Brooklyn got potholes da size of the fu*kin car if you dont watch out. Downtown is always under construction and potholes is all over the place in midtown. But yo you just gotta watch how you drive. I drive my car to the city 3 times a week and its not too bad. You got madd meat on them tires. I used to drive an accord on 35 series tires to the city and neva caught a flat. I bent the rim though.

Thanks for the advice guys. The cab drivers are very aggressive, but I feel that they are such great city drivers. They know their cars so well...they can change lanes in front of you with only like 1 foot of clearance. It's not safe and it's annoying, but they got mad skillz.
I can't rent a car because I'm only 19 (you need to be 25 to drive rental cars) and although I fear the NYC roads, I often have a lot of fun taking my car into the city. =)

I've driven my G in quite a few times into the city and I have 19's on my car. Trust me it's just not manhattan that has the pothole or bumps problem in new york, it's pretty much all over (even the highways). At least if you're in manhattan, you could somewhat avoid the potholes but if you're on the highway you're pretty much screwed. I wouldn't suggest bringing in your car unless you really have to or just want to showcase it. It's not worth it to give that type of a beating to the vehicle.

Re: G35 NYC Drivers
I wish I had the option like other members to take a beater into NYC. But, I had to trade my old ride to get this one. So, I have bitten the bullet and driven in....but NOT parked. Of course, I have yet to have my ride valet parked anywhere....well, maybe in 5 years or so. ;-)
Until then, I'm parking at my cousin's and taking the train in.

Have you had any dented/scraped rims yet? I want new rims but may just upgrade to 18's to avoid denting. I would like 19" though.
I was going post the same question regarding NYC driving. I drive from NE Queens to NW Queens everyday for work and after a few years with my Max @ 43K miles the car definately has loosened up a lot. There's constructions in all the boros and its seems that all the bridges are being worked on. Soon I will have the G and worry about the same happening. To top it off I live right by all the major construction on the LIE (4 years and still going) by Douglaston Pkwy and pebbles and rocks have beat up on my paint. Now I'm going to have to save up a bit for a small beater to save the G and I'm also investing on a clear bra to save the paint.
Does anyone out there in the NYC area have a G with 30K or more miles that feels the suspension getting worn?
