Long Island - All Season for winter?

Owner of 2004 G35 coupe 6 speed.
I'm trying to contemplate between getting Avon All seasons on my 18-inch or buying cheap JHA(?) 17inch rims w/ blizzaks from tirerack.com.
Problem is that latter one is double the price of the going on all season.
I have experience in driving winter snow w/ RWD car (86 monte carlo with all season in binghamton, NY.)
Have anyone tried to go by all-season on coupe? I have couple of friends w/ bimmers rwd and said it was doable in LI winter.
Opinions would be welcomed.

I got away with using my stock 17's (all-season) for 3 winters. It's definitely doable. Just don't push it in the white stuff. I put on blizzaks last winter.

If $ is not an issue, go for a dedicated set of winter tires. If it is, you can get away with some good all-seasons.

I have the winter combo from tire rack... the same ones you are looking at. And i feel a lot safer driving in snow. the tires are awesome and would highly recommend them.

last winter we got away easy... most of the months were above average.... and this years alamanc is prediciting a heavy winter .... so in that case it would make sense going with a complete winter setup. And with our rear wheel drive cars the winter set up makes a lot of sense.

the all seasons would be doable i had all seasons on my audi... but thats cause it was AWD... i didnt feel that comfortable getting all seasons for the coupe...

just my 2 cents.

jkpark78,

I am the owner of a 2004.5 5AT G35 Coupe, and I live in Queens.

Starting in the winter of 2004, I purchased a set of AHAJH3 17's from TireRack with Michelin Pilot Alpin High Performance Snow Tires. During the winter, My coupe feels hands-down more planted on the road than my other car, which is a FWD with Ultra High Performance All Seasons. After going through two winters, I can tell you that you will feel much safer with a winter setup on your coupe.

If you decide to purchase a set of 17's for your winter setup, I'd like to let you know that I am selling my winter setup. The tires now all have 18K miles on them, and the wheel are all in good condition. I am planning to let them go for cheap, so if this interests you please let me know. You obviously won't have to pay for any shipping.

I would go with winter setup. I had the OEM 19's on during last winter and was fine in the cold weather, but a couple of days it snowed less than an inch, my car could not move. Luckily i had my wife's Murano to use during the snow days, but even that which has the all-season tires and AWD was slipping around in the 2-3 inch snow. I think we were lucky that it didnt snow much last winter, with the exception of 2 storms. Unfortunately I am giving up the Murano next month and in preparation for winter driving in my coupe, i picked up the 18" 350z wheels and Dunlop M3 winter tires. I am still worried how the 18" will perform, but I was able to get the used rims REALLY cheap, so I decided to go with the bigger setup. I think our cars would not be useful with all-season tires in the 1" or higher snow. Pay more and get the winter-seup. If you get the all-season which are cheaper, you will make up the cost difference by putting the tires on and taking them off every winter season, which will prob run you $50 with balancing each time.

i know that stock summer performance rubbers are undrivable in winter. I wanted to know the opinion of ppl who replaced their stock summers with all-season.
