I just got my first ticket in 6 years!! I'm new to New York and I'm not too familiar with the laws here yet. I was driving on I-684 on a Friday night, where EVERYONE is going 70mph (I have yet to see anyone driving 55mph on that freeway yet!!!). The state trooper was hiding under a bridge, at the BOTTOM of the hill... so I was cruising at 70 or so, and of course at the bottom of the hill, I'm gonna be going faster due to this thing called gravity... Long story short, the cop was a D$^K... and gave me a ticket for 80 in a 55mph and said to slow down. Before I could ask to see the radar, he already walked away. As I was pulling away, I saw 2 other state troopers pull 2 other cars over. This is an obvious SPEED TRAP and they're just trying to meet their quota since it was the last day of the month!!! They can pretty much pick anyone out of the highway and give a ticket there. SUCKS BIG TIME!!!

Besides eating the ticket, what can I do?? Any help would be great! I know I was speeding a bit, but so is everyone on the damn freeway!!! I was thinking of going to court and at least getting it reduced...? Can I go to traffic school to get it off my record? Thanks in advance for any advice. =/

It is hard to argue with the Troopers. You can take the NY defensive driving class to reduce some of the Insurance cost by 10% and remove some points from your license. Going to court wont hurt - just explain the gravity thing and that the G isnt happy driving at the legal limit - I am sure they will understand.

Go to court. hope the officer doesn't show up. If he does, just plead that you were driving with the rest of the trafic. Even if you do have to pay the fine, get them to at least not put points on your license. From the few times I've been to court, I've realized as long as they get their money, they won't charge you with the points.

I've been doing some research and I think I'll try to go to court to at least get the points off my record OR at least get a reduced fine. 25 over is going to reap havoc on my insurance rates. I'm hoping that since this is my first ticket in 6 years, and only the 2nd ticket since I've gotten since 16, the judge will give me a slight break. I'm not one to speed all the time, but it's inconceivable to drive 55 when 18 wheelers are flying by at 70mph. I think our "G's" get picked on more often than other cars. My radar detector goes nuts when I'm near NYC with my Ka hittin' 5 bars MAX all the time, not including all those lasers as well. I understand speeding in traffic, narrow lanes, etc... but 3 open lanes in upstate NY, 11pm, no one on the freeway, waiting at the bottom of the hill??! I'm thinking of going back to that spot and taking a pix with my digital camera to bring with me to court to show the speed trap.

 

hey I got a ticket for 80 in a 55 and got it reduced to a seatbelt about 3 mounts ago. Just show up to court get there early and talk to the officer not the judge. Give him a senseable reason why you were speeding dont lie to him....and I am sure you will it reduced....remember you will be there with many others who are in worst situation than you are. If all this fails the insurance company usually waits untill you second ticket in 18 months before they jack up your insurance ( I know I asked them). Definitely go to court. Its the best thing you can do for yourself. You will definitely be able to get a lower penalty

 

Shizzz.... LOL happened to me last month also!!! I was on the Northern Prakway going to Roosevelt and a state trooper got me for an 80 in a 55, he said his gun rounded it off when i asked to see it!! I dont even have a choice to pay, it says I have to show up in court Nassau ( Hempstead) or something on May 29th!!! I dont know what to say either, I was also going along with traffic and didnt pass anyone!! iLLG

some years back i got a ticket in nyc. i went to challenge it. i showed, cop didn't, was postponed. each person gets one skipped court date i found out.

when the date was reset, i said i couldnt' make it. months later, he said he couldn't. this went back and forth for almost a year. day before last date, i cancelled. got a letter in two weeks saying it was dismissed.

My ticket was the same thing... my court date was written directly on the ticket. I guess if you go 25 over, that's the way the process goes. I plead "Not Guilty" and sent it in yesterday. I was doing 70 the whole time with the flow of traffic, but downhill and a tap on our G's and we're up to 75-80... =/
