Trading Cars: How Does it Work in MA?

Does anyone have experience trading cars in the state of MA? How exactly does it work? Do you just sign the title over? Do you pay taxes on the trade?

And how does it work if the other party is from a different state? Any help is appreciated!

No you do not pay taxes on the trade... because you have already paid taxes on the car when you bought it.

Thats all i've got for ya.

thanks man! probably no part-out, as I've got a trade arranged with somebody... but don't ask me what it is, because I want to keep it a surprise for now.

hopefully, it'll go through and I won't have to pay any taxes. a very helpful member PM'd me the following link, which says we don't have to pay taxes if the trade is assigned as a gift:
http://www.mass.gov/rmv/regs/reg3.htm

is that how you signed it over, dg_coupe? did you both just sign the title over to eachother without putting a price down?
