Anyone with Carputer experience?

Hey guys...I was wondering if anyone close to the NYC area has any experience with carputers. I'm planning on building one very soon so I need as much input as possible. Anyone out there?

Re: Anyone with Carputer experience?

well don't have one yet but i've been doing some research. What did you have in mind? What i want to do is hook up the carputer to the stock nav screen. Not sure of the exact placement yet, but its definitely going to be based off a VIA EPIA MII mainboard. I'll either make my own front-end or most likely use one of the many available out there.

The biggest hurdle for me besides cash flow is the availability or lack there of a VGA interface to the stock nav. As of now we're just stuck with a regular composite video signal or at best i think s-video? which won't be using the full potential of the Nav screen. I'm waiting on someone developing something better for the stock nav screen or else i'll just end up putting a modded xbox in there.

Re: Anyone with Carputer experience?

i'm the same as tsolin, gonna be working on it soon.

my plan is to get a 7" touch screen, even though i have the navi cause the AV electronics box cost just as mush as a touchscreen, but you get better quality movies, and easier control, no mouse, keyboard or remote.

now i just need the $$$ and some time to program a custom interface. i'm gonna run Win XPe. PM me if you wanna talk more

Re: Anyone with Carputer experience?

I have all the equipment... just need to work on assembly, but here is the plan...

7" TS to go in the cubby where the OEM screen goes. "Custom" mini-ITX computer to go in the top glove compartment. Computer has a slim-DVD drive and a 5.1 SPDIF output, which feeds perfectly into my 5.1 processor. Wi-Fi antenna to be mounted somewhere under the hood. I might move it to the inside in a hidden location if reception is better. GPS antenna location TBD. But hopefully I can get it to work without being out in the open.
