Squeeze Inn to close current site Saturday; re-opening set for Feb. 15
Published: Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 - 8:02 am
This is the last week to squeeze in at the Squeeze Inn's cramped location on Fruitridge Road.
The popular burger joint, target of lawsuit claiming violations of the Americans With Disabilities Act, is moving to a nearby site at 5301 Power Inn Road, Suite 100. Service at the new location begins Feb. 15.
The old location, 7916 Fruitridge Road., closes at 4 p.m. Saturday. Until then, patrons can still wait for a seat at the counter or tables on the back patio and order the place's signature burger topped with load of melted cheese that creates a distinctive "skirt."
The lawsuit, filed by a disabled woman and alleging that parking and the main entrance at the Squeeze Inn are not accessible to disabled people. The suit also charged that the inside seating area, which has room for 12 counter stools, did not have accessible tables, and the outside seating area is hard to navigate.
The lawsuit prompted an outcry from loyal patrons on the Internet, in letters to the editor and in news reports. Squeeze devotees defended the burger joint, citing its unique ambiance as part of its charm.
Eventually, the lawsuit was dropped, but owner Travis Hausauer said he would move anyway to avoid being targeted by another suit. He said the new location also would accommodate more diners.
"Come experience the original building while you can, and join us for our re-opening at the new location," reads the invitation on the Squeeze Web site.
