insurance doesn't cover personal property. the radio is technically part of the car, so that is covered. however, radar, sunglasses, wallets, etc do not count. instead they are covered by a person's homeowners insurance.
I deal with people that have had their portable navigation / sirius/xm radio / radar detector stolen all the time. Often, insurance won't cover those particular items. If they do, it is considered a vandalism claim and you will most likely have to pay higher premiums in the future. Throw in your $1000 deductible, and it might just make sense to deal with it out of pocket. Once again, sorry Nate.
most typical car insurance policies do cover a small portion of personal property in the car, however it typically has a small limit like $250 as those items should be covered elsewhere either on a homeowners or renters policy.
sorry to hear about your crappy day. What industry were you in? I know an awful lot of headhunters in the bay area, maybe I could recommend one who deals in your industry. Although I think the school idea is a great one. May as well make yourself more marketable while the economy takes a 5 year nose dive.
