Well, both really.
Here is a little something about both spots.

Lafayette has like two nice spots for larger bbq. Benchs, bbq pits. Just have to get there early to ensure the spots don't get taken. You can pay hourly (if there are spots available, via meters) or $5 for an all day pass. And I think the larger bbq area is shaded.

Shadow cliffs...paid parking again (not sure on price). More areas to have bbqs, also have pits. Some shaded areas. This place tends to get filled up quickly cause they allow swimming there so on hot days, it gets packed.

I can be at either spot by 9am at the latest to reserve a spot.

Oh...one more thing, for those wanting to drink....can't at Lafayette and Shadow Cliffs, you need a permit. Shadow Cliffs has horse mounted rangers, and they check for that. I should know, we (some friends of mine) almost got kicked out cause our dixie cups didnt have koolaid in them

The pressure!

Okay, Shadow Cliffs. Only cause the chances of getting a spot are better. I will call them tomorrow to make sure there is nothing going on that we should be concerned with.

There is a perfect spot, under the trees, you can see the parking lot from there but that spot always gets taken first. Other spots, have less shade but I am bringing two good sized canopys.

I HIGHLY recommend people bring themselves some camping chairs to ensure they have a place to sit, just in case.

I'll prob leave the G home for this one and pack up the wagon

Lake Callahan (Raging Waters) in SJ allows beer & wine without a permit, but parking is $6.

Honestly, I don't care where we go, ill driver where ever. I also don't care if I drink or not. We just need to decide and stick to it, regardless of what we have to do to get the spot (someone has to show up early and squat)
