"Lexus Lanes" coming to the Bay Area

Officials are hard at work trying to alleviate the notorious traffic congestion in California. Across the state, drivers sit still in traffic while carpool lanes sit empty, underused by public transit and vehicles carrying multiple passengers. The solution for the Bay Area, as the Metropolitan Transportation Commission sees it, is to allow solo motorists to pay for using the carpool lanes.

The commission is working up a proposal that would start with a pilot project in 2010 or early 2011 on I-680 S over the Sunol Grade and in both directions on I-580 between Livermore and the I-680 interchange. To implement the project over the entire 12-highway system would require the approval of state lawmakers (who are currently considering such a bill for Sacramento), as well as an investment of an estimated $3.7 billion. That would be recuperated and then some in the long run, generating an estimated $6 billion over the course of 25 years, the balance of which would be reinvested into the transportation network. If implemented, drivers running late and motivated to pay the fee would be able to move into the carpool lane at designated spots and pay with in-car transponders. Although the fees have yet to be determined, they are estimated at between 20-60 cents per mile at the outset of the program, eventually ramping up to as much as $1 per mile by 2030.

Similar systems in place in southern California got the nickname "Lexus Lanes" because of the perception that the rich would use them all the time, leaving those with less means stranded in traffic. However officials cite studies that indicate that the system would be used by a wide cross-section of the socio-economic populace.

I heard about this a while back. It's finally coming.

I don't know how much you can really save by driving in the Diamond lanes but anything to squeeze some more money on people that have to drive.

Haha...those are the poor folk lanes.

Yeah down in LA the 92 express way is set up like that using your Fastrak.
Cal Trans hears cha ching, cha ching, cha ching. While our transponder goes beep beep, beep beep, beep beep lol.
Then when you get your Fastrak statement, it's OMG...WTH...

we have a similar setup already in place here in the northwest.. you can pay up to 7 bucks to run the carpool lane on a 10 mile stretch. And guess what? People are paying up!

How bad is that stretch of road? The only place I can imagine paying for here in the Bay Area would be getting on and off the Bay Bridge. Toll is $4. I'd pay $10 total if I drive the <> lane starting in El Cerrito all the way to Hospital Curve in SF.

Then again, I think EVERYONE else would too.

It's pretty bad.. it's a highway that goes from 2 lanes-3 lanes- 4 lanes back to 2 lanes. In a 10-15 mile stretch. It's a secondary main highway that connects Seattle to Tacoma.

It used to take me a little under an hour and a half to get through it during the rush hours

Haha I thought it was literally going to be lanes for Lexuses (Lexi?).

At the new Washington Nationals Stadium there are parking spots that say "Reserved for Lexus Owners". I **** you not.

A dollar a mile is nothing if you routinely spend an hour plus just to travel 2-3 miles during rush hour.
