Driver Training at PIR

Hey, if anyone is interested, I'm going to take the Driver Training offered by Team Continental at PIR October 16th and 17th. It'll be the evening of the 16th and then all day Friday the 17th (they also offer classes on other dates, check out http://www.teamcontinental.com for more info). I have a friend who used to help teach the class. You use your own car, but must have a helmet. You spent the first evening having a "chalk talk" to discuss traction, shifting, cornering, etc from 6:30-10PM. Then, starting at 7:30 the next morning, you spend the day on the track learning to drive better and faster. I hear it's pretty fun and that it will definitely improve your skills at a driver. Plus you get to use your own G! It costs $195. I'm signed up - any other G35 drivers want in? go to teamcontinental.com.

Gosh, they couldn't provide a friggin' helmet? I would hate to buy one for just one day of driving.

Word! That's the worst part of the deal. I'm not buying one. I'll beg/borrow/steal one from a friend...now I just gotta find that friend. Still - that driving class is going to be a blast. A friend of mine who did it said it was amazing - imaging driving as fast as you want on a wide open track all day long.

Re: Driver Training at PIR

besides the helmet thing, $195 sounds like a great deal for taking your G out on the track. I'll be seriously considering this. It'd be nice to see some fellow forum members in person and wring the G out. Thanks for the heads up, Townsley.

I agree, I think $195 is a great price for what you get, such as the one on one experience with an instructor on the track!

Think we could get away with a bike helmet?

I'll admit that the bike helmet idea did cross my mind for a fraction of a second. :-)

I might try to hit up a biker bud for an old helmet. I wonder if that would suffice?

How's your new coupe BTW?

Re: Driver Training at PIR

I'm bailing on the class and they've refunded my money - 2 reasons. First, I'm going to do a suspension upgrade first. Second, they guy I work with who was going to lend me his helmet just got laid off and I no longer have the Helmet Connection. I'll probably reschedule for another class next year - they're going to be posting the new schedule in January.

I think I'm gonna wait til next year also. I figure I have one more summer on my S03's and I'll use them up at the class and then get replacements.

I don't think the bike helmet will work. They specifically state that the helmet you use has to be ratedat "Snell 1980 or better." I'll bet the bike helmet won't pass.

Re: Driver Training at PIR

It's a ways off (July) but I think I'm gonna do this one coming up. I'll probably have all of my mods except coilovers done by then and it'll be nice to see what the G can do.

I'm just gonna break-down and buy a good helmet because I plan on entering more of these training and autocross events.

Anyone else thinking about this?

Re: Driver Training at PIR

I definitely down with this. Friend I work with is well acquainted with Team Continental and will lend me a helmet. He races SCCA. I have to check and see if anything going on July 30 since it's a Friday. I'd hate to have to wait until October. I need to wear out my tires too!

Yeah - if you guys are going to go in July, I'll sign up too. I have a helmet now that a friend loaned me and it'd be good to have some fellow G drivers in the class. I'm down!

Re: Driver Training at PIR

I'll check with my SCCA bud to see if there's any inside scoop. My goal is to abuse my tires a bit so I'll "have" to get new ones very soon. I should have my Stillen exhaust and crank pulley on by then. That's all that's in the queue...for now. Famous last words.
