You can take a single picture in RAW and adjust the exposures with RAW processing. Then use each of those to make an HDR image.

Cal did you look at a tutorial for photomatix, I have heard that this is one of the best programs to preform HDR, any insite?

i'll be looking at them over spring break, which starts in a few hours for me.

and yes, i have heard over and over that it is the best program for HDR conversions.

Artificially adjusted exposure won't give you additional details that you needed for proper HDR processing. This is just sort of like adding color to a picture without adding anymore detail.
