If you think about it, it is a weird thing to do. I've driven through so many states and it doesn't fail when you stop for gas someone asks what the hell is the tape for!
One guy was like wow what happened? He thought the tape was holding the front end together after an accident.
I hate putting the tape on, it looks bad. From rock chips to insane amount of bug guys its does help. Don't let it flap in the wind though, it ends up scratching the clearcoat pretty bad.

Custom clear bras are an option. But the visible lines suck, I've seen them on high end bright colored cars and it doesn't seem to take away much shine but it is visable up close one way or another, and they take damage as well. The pricing of the custom stuff including install is just not worth it in the end.
Road trips are generally worse on the front ends vs daily driving since you're following other cars with good tires that shoot stuff out the back.
