I've been kinda slack lately and waited a long time to finally put my wheels back on the car only cause they needed to be polished and it's such a chore to do. Harbor Freight had this rear wheel roller for motorcycles that you could use to oil chains. I thought I could use it to clean my wheels easier, but they didn't have any in stock. I found these rollers somewhere else in the store. So with those rollers, leftover MDF, screws, and my so-so wood working skills, I built my own stand. Makes the cleaning/polishing of both sides faster. But you still have to pull the wheels off the car which is the part I hate doing.

The two rollers were like 5.xx a piece and everything else was just leftovers I had in the garage.

Props for effort, but I'm thinking there's quite a bit of friction with those rollers. Once you apply pressure to the lip with your rag or sandpaper or whatever you use, it will slow down and stop rolling pretty quickly. So you'll have one hand constantly spinning it. That's pretty much just as hard as polishing it in place without the rollers right? Wheel shops use something like a lathe or something powered, so that it will keep the wheel in motion while they use their grinder, sandpaper, polishing rag, whatever...

 

I didn't want to constantly spin the wheel. I wanted to be able to apply polish, spin it with my left hand, apply more polish..and just move my way around the wheel lip without physically lifting it and rotating it. Then when I wipe it off, same thing, buff it, then spin, buff then spin.

That makes sense, but then it would be the same thing as just jacking up a corner, or side, or front or rear and doing the same thing. Then you could avoid even having to take the wheels on/off, which you said yourself was what you hated most.

Again, not to bash your idea, as it's useful for what it does. However, given your preferences and your intentions, seems like you could've done the same thing with a jack and a jackstand or two, which you already hvae.

 

I know your not bashing the idea, its cool. It would be the same if I was just cleaning the front face/lips of the wheels. The reason I take the wheels off to clean is to polish the inner barrels really good. So this allows me to clean both sides easier while off the car.

 

Gotcha. Either way, pretty cool. Also nice if you want to have it setup on a table so you can stand while you do it, instead of sitting on the garage floor or a short stool.
