Z Tube installed

I knew it would be easy, but it was VERY easy. Took me about 20 minutes to do it. I havn't driven the car much yet (just around the block) but first impressions were good. I was a skeptic about any power gains, I was just counting on the sound improvement. Before I even got down the driveway I thought I could feel the car reving more freely and eagerly. Maybe just in my head, but I thought the car pulled a little easier. The sound change was nice, but not as dramatic as I was thinking it might be. It's really too soon to say though. I need to drive around more to really hear the difference.

For any of you on the fence about the Z Tube, just get it. It's a really simple install and I think it will give you a little extra power and a nice sound bonus. I'm going to go ahead and assume that it has given me the extra 2 hp at the crank to reach that magical 300hp mark (it's an 05).

Next mod: Popcharger... I'm guessing I should get a little more power from it as well right?

Thanks to the site for convincing me to start modding my new toy!

hehe...

The normal response to that question is 'do a search'. I'll help you out though. The Z tube is the intake tube from the 350Z. The one on the G35 has a resonator on it which restricts the airflow to quiet the engine noise down. By swapping the G tube for the Z tube you get a few extra ponies and a more aggressive sound. It's a pretty cheap mod and very easy to install. There is a lot of info already posted about the Z tube on this site so do a search and you'll find out all you need to know.

Follow up: Just wanted to say that after a week of the Z Tube I can deffinately say that it was worth it. The sound from it is great. Gives the G a much nicer growl while the revs are climbing, and it makes a very nice growl between gears while the revs are falling. It's hard to tell if it really did add power cause I put it on soon after the break in period was up so I didn't have a real good grasp on fast the car was to begin with. But it certainly didnt hurt things, and having seen the G tube up close it really had to add a little bit of power up top.

I'm also now very eager to get a popcharger and borla exhasust for the G as well... to quote Tim the toolman taylor, "What do we need? More Power!"

The Z-tube is around $75 new. I would recommend clicking on the sponsor store links if you want to shop for one.

The only drawback w/ the Z tube is that since the louder growl happens about 4k rpm, you want to rev it high to hear it all the time!

I also just got my Z-tube installed yeserday by the Infiniti dealership, I think I notice a little extra pull also between the 3000 and 4000 rpm range but I really can't hear an noticeable sound change though. I don't think the tube needs to be broken in or anything, is there more than one kind of Z-tube on the market? Rumor has it that by adding just the Z-tube you can gain an extra 5 hp to the wheel, doesn't seem likely though-right?

I thought I saw your car at Lokey, Keith. I took my car in for the rear view mirror rattle and something that had to deal with the fuel regulator. Anyways, I'll be getting my Z-Tube at the June 11th meet at the next All Florida G35 Meet.

At most, the Z-Tube adds 2 HP at the crank, which translates to about 1.6 at the wheels. Why, you ask?

Well, the Z-tube, as the name inplies, comes from the 350Z engine. Stock, the 05 Track 350Z engine makes 300 hp at the crank. Stock, the 05 6MT makes 298 at the crank. the only difference between the 05 6MT engine and the 05 350Z track engine is the Z-tube. everything else is the same.

So, the Z-tube in a 05 6MT engine makes it just like the 05 350Z track eninge. In other words, 300 HP at the crank. Which is 2 more than 298.

The math isn't quite the same when comparing the 05 5AT's, but realistically, I can't imagine it doing anything all that much different than 2 HP.

Now, combine it with a high flow filter, or something else, and more of a difference might be realized. Of course, I felt no difference whatsoever when I installed my Z-tube and K&N hi flow, but my butt-dyno is not so sensitive.
