How much are you willing to spend? There's nothing worst than riding a POS bike....you will get sick of it or it will leave you stranded somewhere.

Good call, talk to your local bike shop and learn what's good/bad and what suits your needs. hokiesean started a good 'I want to buy a bike' thread, lots of people chimed in with good advice. Don't buy Wal-Mart crap. Should be easy to find a good used bike from craigslist or similar.
