Trunk remote open *sometimes* not working - ideas?

Sometimes when I walk up to my 2004 G35 Sedan to put something in the trunk, the trunk lid will not open when I depress the button on the remote. The doors will lock and unlock but the trunk will not open. Also, the interior trunk release button will not work either. To get the trunk to open, I have to put the key in the ignition and turn it on, then the interior button works and probably the remote as well.

I'm not sure what causes this but it has happened several times. It happened this morning using my keys / remote and my wife last drove it last night using the other key / remote. Any ideas what would cause the trunk not to open? Is there some weird valet mode I'm getting into? Thanks!

Either your wife is screwing it up (LOL), or it is time for the
dealer. I don't have the interior trunk release like you do, but
I have noticed many times that the trunk release button on
my key fob will not work unless I am very close to the trunk.
It sounds like it is time to visit your friendly Infiniti delaer!

Don't know why the interior button wouldn't work, but you do depress the remote button for several seconds right? (it doesn't work the same way as unlocking the door where you just press it)

It's electric, the key operates mechanically, thus part of the electric solenoid is malfunctioning.

I've seen this before, you need to look at the latch and make sure it's in the proper position. Most of these latches have a feature where you can push the latch down and the trunk becomes impossible to open by electronics, only a key will open it. You'll also notice the valet key doesn't work for the trunk. Thus, in theory you can protect anything in your trunk by sliding the trunk latch into the downward position.

My advice is reach down into the latch and try and pull the entire latch mechanism up.

my car does this too, and sometimes when my windows are down my doors won't unlock by the keyfob. Any suggestions because all the local dealer will do is screw it up.

The owners manual says that you have to press and hold the trunk release button for longer than half a second. Press and hold it next time and I guarantee it will work.

Re: Trunk remote open *sometimes* not working - id

I'm sure I'm holding the button long enough. I held if for 10 seconds this morning and nothing -- but the door locks worked with no problems. Plus, the interior release button would not work either.

I was able to get the trunk to open using the dash switch only after I put my key in the IGNITION, not the trunk. I'm sure it's not a mechanical problem but rather some type of electrical issue. I'm afraid the dealer won't be able to figure it out, especially since it doesn't happen every time, more like once every two weeks. Any other suggestions?

make sure the switch in the glove compartment is released, otherwise you will not be able to open the trunk or the gas lid.

the wife did that to me, and as I couldn't find my keys, I was driving around with the valet key. Almost running out of gas, I couldn't get the gas lid to open to add gas. Gave gurgen a good laugh, as I called him on the phone from the gas station to see if he ever had that problem.

Gurgen said to unlock the trunk release, plus asked if I was using the valet key.

About that time, my wife says, oh ya.. and flicks the switch for me and hands me my keys from her purse.

Re: Trunk remote open *sometimes* not working - id

I had the problem last fall where my trunk wouldn't open AT ALL! I had to rig a strap from the pass-through to the release cable to use for a week until I could bring the car in.

What they found was that the wire going to the trunklid had split since mine has been out for longer than most of the Gs out there, and had probably gone through more wear than some. It may be that yours is making intermittent contact, as the guys said they would probably be seeing a few more similar problems, but would now know what to check first. Not certain if this is your problem however.

I haven't noticed the problem lately, but that is definitely the same issue I've had in the past.

Did your local dealer fix the problem or did it go away? I seem to have the same issue. Took the car to the dealer who (of course) could not duplicate the problem and send me on my merry way. Needless to say it still happens from time to time.

For me, the problem just kinda went away. I'm guessing it will happen again, but it hasn't in the last 6 months.

Follow-up: I figured out the problem. At least on my car. Be sure the is fully stopped before shutting off the ignition. If the car is rolling and the key is switched off, the trunk release remains disabled (it is automatically disabled when the vehicle speed is above zero).
