I heard a lot of good things about Nikon D40, but its been a while and I would like to know if there's anything else that came after that's better than that. Thanks!

Yo Jason, be wary with going with the D40. While it is a cheap entry level DSLR and it can mount any Nikon lens, it doesn't have the internal motor on the camera to power the focusing capabilities on most lenses (you'd be manually focusing them yourself by hand). You'll be limited to lenses that are branded AF-S or AF-I (since those are the lenses with built-in focus motors) if you wanted to use autofocus.

If the budget's tight, I'd look for a used D80 body only (or even better, a D90) and go with a 50mm f/1.8 for now. If you're for sure shooting mostly cars (and nature, I guess) wide angle lenses are more ideal. Kit lenses can cover many situations, but not as adequately as pro glass can. Look into a Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8 or a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 later down the line.

Just my $0.02.

P.S. Sup my SoCal 818 Meet buddies!
