Arrow Palomar Mountain, San Diego

Went on a pretty fun drive today.

Here's the route: http://goo.gl/maps/p1CXL

Palomar Mountain, San Diego-screen-shot-2012-11-18-8.35.33-pm.jpg

Basically:
  • Highland Valley Road (from I-15)
  • Bandy Canyond Rd.
  • Turn right on 76 just to the top, then turn back around
  • Then head back down 78, S6, turn towards Lake Wohlford and keep going north
  • S Grade Rd. up to Palomar Mountain
  • E. Grade Rd. down Palomar Mountain
  • HW 76 down the mountain
  • Highland Valley Road back to I-15

It was a lot of fun, and while Highland Valley is my usual target, it was my first time on Palomar Mountain. I had lunch at Mothers Kitchen, a terrific place at the top of the mountain.

Be careful going up S Grade Rd. The engine started getting very hot, probably 50% higher than normal once I pulled into the parking lot at the top. The road is very steep and to really pull out of the turns, you need to keep the RPMs very high.

Overall, an excellent run!

Its definitely a fun drive. For those that haven't been up there before watch for bikers sharing the road and check your temp gauge regularly.
