What is there to do in SOCAL ???
I want to plan a trip to the west coast and I am not sure where to start as I have only been there on business. My wife has never been and I would like to take her. Any ideas/recommendation?
We would like to stay somewhere that we can balance out time between the beach, some nightlife as well as some things to do to help pass the time during the day (like miniature golf, real golf etc)
What is the "Mytle Beach" of the west coast?

If you got money to burn stay in Beverly Hills. That's really the place you want to be. Sunset strip is a few miles away, as well as Hollywood...also Santa Monica 3rd street is not too far...and Malibu's like 20 mins away?

Depends on where you are going in SoCal...
Were you more interested in going to the LA area or the San Diego area??
If going to LA i'd go through Hollywood and Beverly Hills, Hermosa is really nice too. If you dont want to be around all that LA smog air then you could come down to San Diego, downtown is pretty sweet at night, almost every beach is good although i'd recommend La Jolla Shores.

don't believe any of 'em., There aint nothin to do in LA except watch a drive by shooting. j/k.
There's lots to do around here. If you want to play real golf, there's a whole bunch of nice courses depending on where you want to stay.
You can drop the wife off on Rodeo Drive and then you head up to Malibu or to Palos Verdes to play some golf....then after you spend the kids college fund on shopping and golf, you head out to any nice restaurant in Bev Hills or Newportfor a nice romantic dinner.
Myrtle Beach of the West Coast? Hmmm , don't think we have anything that nice here. Except maybe some parts of the Newport area.

Santa Monica is your best bet next to the beach but within reach of culbs. Beverly Hills is near by and so is Sunset Blvd. Lots of places to shop and places to eat as well. Rent a car for the weekend and drive up north on PCH (Pacific Coast Hwy) hit Malibu, Suma beach and everything else along the way. Get a romantic dinner at Charthouse before heading back to Santa Monica. Endless stuff of things to do here in LA bring your shorts right now cus it's around 85 during the day. Enjoy and have fun!

Of course, I'm not really one to ask, my good weeks are attending at least one G35 meet, hitting the firing range and getting trashed three nights. But that's a good week.
Thanks for all the input. Is the smog in LA really that bad? I have been to Irvine and that area was quite nice- The air quality there was good. But I guess that is some distance from the LA. The pacific coast highway sounds like fun- will probably rent a convertable when we come. I was looking up some info on San Diego last night- the SOCAL area as a whole seems nice. I know that there are some areas to avoid however (like in southern LA). We should have time to tour much of the area as I am planning on being there for a week. Disney Land sounds like a good idea, and I have never been to the San Diego Zoo which I also hear is nice.
It's difficult for me to think of a place to set up our home base - seems like so many choices.

Make sure you don't make a wrong turn into Compton as well. Another place you can visit is Universal Studios. It would only take you several hours to see everything there, and tickets are pretty cheap.
