Non-stretched tires

This should arguably be in the tires forum, but since it's specific to an '07 am posting here. Curious to hear what you think; had to replace my tires, so decided to go with non-OEM sizes to a) buy better tires and b) match the look of the front and rear wheels.

Sizes were 235/50/18 front and 255/45/18 rear, and they're Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics, which have really good reviews on Tire Rack. My first G'years, curious to see how they do.

Anyway, the result is instead of the stock (rear) and common stretched look for sports cars and sedans, these are...normal? Old school? Dunno, but after a week I really like it. Thoughts?

I like them. It makes the car looks lower and it also protects your rims when the car goes over the bump or the curb.

Those tires are too tall for your car. Your speedometer will be off. The side wall is too high and you have not gained anything in appearance. I'd suggest sticking with stock sizes. I'm not fond of a "super" stretched tires but those don't look right on the G. Sorry to say, I know you just spend a bunch of cash. Why not just buy stock sizes?

LOL...yes, they're a total of .36" taller, which is not only invisible to the naked eye, but will make my speedo off by exactly .86 mph at 65 mph... I think you may be reacting to the tread at the edges, which is more noticeable and make them look bigger - it threw me at first too.

Anyway, thanks for the opinion, for a while I wasn't sure I liked it either but they've grown on me. I actually would have preferred to stick with the stock sizes, but the selection is really limited for 225/50/18. Switching to 235 really opens it up, and figured a little more traction at the rear couldn't hurt either.

blinds!de, the ride is pretty much the same, although it seems like little ripple bumps are a little softer. Could be placebo effect tho. I keep meaning to take side pics for you, will do so soon.

If .36 is invisible to the naked eye, the ride over ripple bumps have to be immeasurable to a naked butt You're right I was thinging the stock tires were 225/45 18 not 50's. It's not too far off then. The side wall does look puffier though.

How are these for road noise compared to the stock tires (the stock ones are loud IMO).

Honestly, I think they look better than stock. The stock tires look too narrow for the wheels. This should be better at protecting your rims too.

I'm curious as to how they stack up against the GSD3's.

I didn't think the RE050s had much road noise, and these are the same - no noticeable noise. They do seem to get just a bit stiff when cold? I could be imagining it, but the seem to vibrate slightly when first rolling, then it goes away within a couple of minutes - odd...

Dry traction is good, about the same as the RE050. Haven't had them out in the rain yet, but they're supposed to be great there. And a 45k mile warranty is pretty sweet.

EDIT:>>> Just had them in the rain for the first time. Really heavy rain had just passed, and it was still raining - on the highway they were rock solid, not even a hint of lost traction or hydroplaning. In corners on wet pavement, also impressive.

45k mile warranty? Where'd you get those tires, and who the hell is silly enough to warranty a max performance summer tire to 45k?

I've read a bit more comparisons between the asymetrics and the GSD3's.

The consensus is that the GSD3's are great, the asymetrics are just slightly better in every way (except two IMO).

The GSD3's look better, and on tire rack, they'll cost me about $80 less for 4.

Maybe it's just me, but road/tire noise is the only noise I hear loudly from inside the car.

It's definitely from the tires because the volume of the noise changes drastically as I go from a freshly paved road (silent) to an older rougher road (loud).

That's interesting - the warranty isn't on tires.com (Discount Tire). But I have a 45k warranty paper from Discount Tire in my hot little hand, so someone will be honoring it if needed

Doesn't really matter, I consider good tires to be an investment in my longevity...

Will take pics this weekend when I wash her - it's been raining all week.

More

More pics, hopefully these are better.

SilverG, since you asked I listened for road noise, and you're right - it is the loudest noise at less-than-highway speeds. The Eagles aren't particularly noisy.

I'm confused on why you'd say the Asymmetrics are better in most ways than GSD3s, but aren't going to buy them? I was set on the GSD3s, then decided it made sense to buy the new, and apparently better, technology...?

Anyway, if it helps - I bought from Discount Tire, and since I've bought there before talked the manager into a $100 discount, plus the Goodyear rebate they were running. I've found that those guys are usually willing to deal, at least a bit.

Good luck!
