Reasons to fail inspection?
Reasons to fail inspection?
So I took my old toyota beater to get the inspection done at discount car clinic. The guy failed me because he said the rack and pinion was leaking power steering fluid.
I talked one of my friends who is a mechanic, but not an inspector; and he told me that that is not one of the listed items under the required inspection.
Likely he thinks that they are just trying to make a little extra money off of me.
I have no interest in repairing the car, its a beater that I only drive when I'm in Houston, I'm going to school in Cali right now. The guy told me it will be $980 to replace the rack and pinion.
The leak is not bad, I haven't had to refill the power steering tank for a few months now. The car is barely worth 2k.
Anybody know what is on the required list for a car to pass inspection? I wanna know if they are trying to hit me up for cash, if so I think I'm going to give the ASE a call...

Rack and pinion shouldnt be an issue, ask for the reinspection paper. If they dont give you one they should 1. never have charged you if they did. 2. Are lieing through their teeth.
The reinspection paper will tell you what is wrong and needs to be corrected. Then that paper is your "credit" to have your car inspected again for free.
