My A/C stopped blowing cold air while coming back from downtown. Pretty damn embarrassing when you have 3 other people in the car on a hot Texas evening.
I tried to refill the refrigerant myself and found it's almost impossible to get the pressure correct because after the car sits for a while the low side psi changes up or down by a huge margin. I ended up spending $70 on two cans of refrigerant in a trial and error method of adding and venting in an attempt to get it working consistently again.
Got fed up and went to a shop this morning, dropping $78 to recharge and they told me the compressor is making a racket and they can't pinpoint any leak.
So I'm out $148, I still have no cold air in my car, and temperatures are over 100 degrees right now outside.
Here's what the shop told me needs to be done:
Compressor - $645 Part + $116.05 Labor
Dryer - $337.90 Part + $148 Labor
Evac and Recharge - $189.95
Replace Belts - $68 parts + 63.30 Labor
Grand total: $1,568.20
What do you guys think? Is this a good price? I just moved back into my parents' house after becoming unemployed; is there anyway to get this done cheaper? Any Houstonians know a good place to go?
