Dyno Tonight
Re: Dyno Tonight
I have dyno'd the heck out of my car and everytime the 5th run was the highest. HP and TQ go up as the oil temp increases. If your fans kick on then you know the oil temp is up.
The problem with driving around to warm up the car right before the dyno is oil cools very fast. By the time you get strapped up to the dyno the oil has cooled dramatically.
I personally would do a set of 5-6 runs without the wires connected. Then connect all the wires with the car still sitting on the dyno and do another set of 5-6 runs, one right after the other with no pause inbetween. The time it takes to re-attach all the wires will give the engine enough time to cool down. You would then compare the top run from each set. This experiment will take much less than an hour and give you reliable results.
This is how I compared the crawford and kinetix plenums.

The problem with this approach is that if heat-soak was the factor that prevented me from getting the higher values that the dyno guy predicted, this would severely handicap the results. I don't know how all this works, so I have to go by what the dyno guy who runs these things all the time believes.

Re: Dyno Tonight
If it's a 1-minute switchout then I would vote for a total of 6 runs alternating with and without the grounding kit every other run, ie. ABABAB.
I guess it's not fair for you to have to give me a free grounding kit if it does better than no kit. So I'll just say that I'm willing to put up to US$100 toward this in the interest of science.

Re: Dyno Tonight
Like I said, oil temp drops very quickly. The only way you are going to get heat soak is if you make run after run with no breaks in between. When you reach the 6th or 7th run your power will stop dropping off. This is how you will know that you have reached your maximum and heat soak is settling in.
But if you quit for 5 or 10 min. or whatever to connect the wires the heat soak will be totally gone, the oil temp will be back to normal and you'll be ready to do another set of runs.
When you do this get the dyno guy to charge you by the hour. My last set of 12 runs cost me $150 or $12.50/run.

Re: Dyno Tonight
Okay, I spoke with one of the guys at the dyno place today. The fellow that did my runs yesterday wasn't there. This fellow said that variability is about 1%, so he felt that anything over a 2 point gain or loss would be significant. He thought that for this application, if we saw more than a 2 Hp or TQ reading, that it would be a very successful mod to consider in his opinion, especially for the price ($250 CDN list). Not sure if that is significant enough for anyone here, but I'm hoping to show at least a bit better, but we'll see. He suggested running 1-with, 2-w/o, 3-w/o, 4-w, and if time permits, 5-w and 6 w/o. Should we look at averages of all the completed runs then? How about a total 4 point gain (HP and TQ added) to deem a success or failure?
The true skeptics amongst you don't believe that H-G systems do anything at all, even though empirical data shows smoothness and throttle response changes. So a statistically significant change should of even 4 points should satisfy you.
All runs compensated for environmental conditions. If GroundingGear™ is a success, Steve pays the $100 USD as agreed. If not, I give Steve a full refund. Any disputes over the results if they are not conclusive, we split the difference. All agreed?
BTW, I have a tentative time booked for tomorrow afternoon. I trust Steve's word as a gentleman re payment if we can do the money transaction by Dyno time.

Fine by me.
PM me the email address to which to send the PayPal funds. How much is the dyno time going to cost? I'll send you the full dyno amount up to $100, as agreed.
BTW, you charge $250CDN for your grounding kit? I thought it was like US$79...

Re: Dyno Tonight
Actually, the suggested list is $250 for the 6-wire kit in Canada, similar to the other 5-wire commercial kits. The dealers sell GroundingGear™through parts for $220 to $230 typically. They have to make a profit! I don't offer other than the G35 and the similar 350z kit for direct sale or I would risk offending my authorized dealer base. So as a courtesy to forum members, I charge a similar price to Z-xtreme for the basic kit. The dyno would be about $130, but I'll see what I can negotiate since I just did one yesterday. Check your PM for my B-I-L's Paypal account. This will be interesting. I'm going to try to put my stock air-box back in to bring my mods down to minimal (only Z-tube) if I get the chance.

Yeah, the cost of entertaining millions! Just watch, I won't be able to reproduce the results I got. There'll be some funky chemical released in the air at the dyno place that affects all electrical mods or something (damn terrorists, call Bush! They're in Canada now!)
You're always caught with your pants down when there is an audience! I either get to moon you or show up shrunken and embarassed!
I may take you up on your offer if I have to refund Steve's money. BTW, if you're a skeptic, please just send the money now.
If you're convinced by the dyno, I'll just apply it to the set of GroundingGear™ you're going to want from me.

Re: Dyno Tonight
hey gord,
I'm not a skeptic. I had a homemade set on my sedan and noticed the usual smoothness etc. I didn't notice any additional power though. I'm just interested in the results. I, and a couple others were defending the grounding kits on FA to a lot of people who were calling us fools through their posts. I have a good feeling about the results. This should hopefully put us one step closer to making an informed decision on the merits, or lack thereof, of grounding kits in relation to any power gains. I say one step closer because no matter the results, there will be some hemm'n and ha'n about the accuracy of the dyno, SAE this, shoulda done the dyno with the kit on first/ last, etc.

Re: Dyno Tonight
Sorry for the delay guys. I just got back. I'm afraid I'm going to have to wait until tomorrow before I post the results if I get the chance. My wife's grand-mother just passed away and I have to run over to the in-law's house. I hope you understand.
I think that the results show an across the band increase that is noticeable and significant, just not to the huge gains that a few have reported. Gotta run, sorry.
