Widest I can go on 9" wheel

What is the widest i can go on a 9" wheel, or whats a good size for that width?

On my old car I had 265 Kumho SPT's on a 9" rim. The sidewall was relatively flat and had no rim protector. I would say 275 at most, but a 285 may fit but will bulge for sure.
