looking forward to doing this, little hesitant to do it without buying an extra set of stock boxes in case I switch them back out when I go to sell.

 

I am not sure what is worse. People just cutting holes in their intake or everyone impressed by it.

And I'm already one step ahead of you btw! I cut holes in the headers for better exhaust flow...

 

Out of curiosity, instead of removing material from the boxes themselves, did you first try to remove the resonators that are fixed below the boxes?

If so, how did that compare to your modification?

I removed the resonators only so as not to disturb the intent of having the front of the intake boxes not match up and seal properly with the bumper intake pieces.

 

How was the sound after that? How long did it take you?

 

About 5-10 min. I don't notice a whole lot of difference in sound but I don't have a couple extra useless pieces of plastic in my car now.

 

Why do you conclude they are useless?

 

To me they are useless. Empty plastic bottles that cut down on engine noise don't interest me.

 

so for those of you who did this, does it increase engine noise at high speeds ie crusing down the highway? Wouldn't mind a bit more of a growl during exceleration and shifting but dont' want my engine humming loudly down the highway on a road trip. Comments, thoughts...?

How do you go about keeping that area clean. Won't dirt and debris enter the open box?

 

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I just found it. And it died just when it was getting interesting.

Does anybody have an answer to this last question that was asked?

 

Dirt and debris will enter the box in it's stock, unmodified form; just to a lesser extent.

 

I just removed the intake resonators rather than destroying the stock boxes. it actually does only take 10 minutes or so. 5 minutes each. I'm not sure if I notice a difference but now theres a extra hole air suction. I do notice a louder "air suction" sound .. or maybe I just never paid attention to it. The sound is however, obviously not on par with the GAB mod.

Took off the attaching "L" piece on the airbox to the resonator. The sound is now noticeable during cruising however, its a good sound and its not overly loud.

 

So, just to be sure what you are saying, you removed the intake resonators and the bracket on the airbox. The result is air suction sound accelerating from a stop, and more (good) noise at cruising speed only. Not louder while accelerating from a stop. Correct?
