Poor man's intake
Well after all of the reading and researching I decided against purchasing an aftermarket intake system due to the fact that there was very little to no gain and only sound improvement. I definitely didn't want to waste money for no gain but still I love the sound of an intake on this motor. So whats the next best thing? Save money and get still get that roar under the hood, of course! I had just finished up a remote start install and thought, hey what the hell, pull the G back in the garage and see what I can do. I pulled the factory air boxes out and proceeded to cut the faces off of the boxes to allow a straight route into the panel filter. This took a whole whopping 25 minutes with a phone call in the middle of the process. I threw these modded boxes back and took it for a drive...WOW! I am not going to talk about butt dyno or any of that other nonsense as I havent really noticed a huge gain off the bat. I did this purely for noise (which is basically what everyone does) but this quick little mod definitely gave some breathing room. Under partial throttle it is definitely noticeable with a little more purr but under WOT it howls!! I am going to be ordering new K&N panels to allow for the little more extra flow, plus since the boxes are wide open I will be able to clean and reuse.
Heres a quick shot of the boxes: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...204_114641.jpg |
Very clever and nicely done! Retain the OEM look while getting AM like sound. good job!

I'm suprised more people haven't gone this route considering there isn't much to be gained with AM intake. On my motorcycle forum lots of folks have modded their stock airbox to allow more air in. Hmmm interesting!!

could you post a pic of your engine bay with these on please
|
WOW!!! that is impressive!
|
Take a video please. Let us hear the sound you love.
thx |
You take away some of the stock cold air flow though. Now engine bay air can now enter the intake from the open box. Before, cold air from behind the grille is what gets funneled to the intake.

Thats cool!

Niceeee, do you have pics of it installed in the engine bay?

I really am surprised no one else has decided to do this. I recommend this to any G owner that has the stock air boxes. Here are the pics. Pretty stealth; if the hood was popped on a lot most people would probably walk right past without even looking twice. I only have my android phone and I'm sure the video off of that would sound like crap so I will try and use my digi cam once its charged.

To reply to this: Besides Injen and Stillen true cold-air long tube intakes, every intake system for the G is susceptible to engine bay air entering in the filters. Hell, look at most of the SRI; they suck in way more engine bay air than this small mod. Also, I did not trim the sides of the boxes as you see in the pics, so on either side they are sucking in the corners towards the headlights.

There are two pieces in each cat. The material in front of the o2 sensor is ceramic, and the material behind the o2 sensor is metal. you can only punch out the ceramic material...i guess making it a 1/2 cat. when i found this out, i just bought test pipes. to remove the metal material, you would have to cut the cat open and reweld it back together afterwards |
