Silly question about 6MT's

And please don't respond "Why?" or any derivation of that.

Anyways, is it possible (and/or how difficult would it be) to get the screen between the gauges to display what gear you're in on a 6MT? as it does with the automatic in DS/S (or whatever the tiptronic mode is called)

kvangil Mar 10, 2010 08:47 AM

Not that I know of--but I always know what gear I'm in.... :)

Seems to me it could be don but it would be a lot of work. You would need to have a gated plate under the shifter with a bunch of micro switches. Then zoomed LEDs in the dash. A LOT OF WORK.

That's strange I thought it displayed what gear you in on a 6MT. It does it on a AT. I think you can get an aftermarket display thingy to do that

yeah...texas...I think you said that already :)

kool_yaar Mar 10, 2010 09:45 AM

^+1 to what texas said, it would be tedious but a very cool mod, money allowing it would look neat... you planning on doing it?

Q8y_drifter Mar 10, 2010 09:59 AM

Anything could be done, just depends on how much you wanna spend.

Rutland Mar 10, 2010 10:01 AM

I would assume the screen is already configured that way as it works in the Automatic G. I'm assuming "all" I would need is the transmitter portion, i.e. the part that hooks to the stick/transmission itself.

InTgr8r Mar 10, 2010 10:43 AM

It's going to take a LOT more than that.
Don't forget that the screen is controlled by the CPU.

Rutland Mar 10, 2010 10:47 AM

So, my guess is that nobody has done this, right?

And yeah, I'd imagine that its controlled by the CPU, but I was curious if it's similar to the paddle shifter thing. Where the car is wired, programmed, and ready to go, it's just missing one or two pieces...or they just never came up with a piece to determine gears from the stick, but they did from the auto.

InTgr8r Mar 10, 2010 10:54 AM

You are the first to post about it AFAIK.

Rutland Mar 10, 2010 11:08 AM

well...I guess I avoided the dreaded "Use search" reply at least :)

kool_yaar Mar 10, 2010 11:37 AM

^ nice, and you actually brought about a good idea, i wont be suprised to see something like this in the near future considering the new Z has the syncro rev match MT where they would already have a signal going for which gear the car is in to the computer.... lets wait and watch...

InTgr8r Mar 10, 2010 12:07 PM

^ good point.
An OE shift gate with micro switches already exists.
