AWD Question

Hey all, I just read a few posts about people with AWD and what i seem to be seeing is question asked "Did you pull the fuse?" I have an X, and i am wondering-----is it that simple for me to go from AWD to RWD for maybe track days? It has to be something more than a fuse that allows these X's to run the ATTESSA-----I mean, there is a differential afterall isnt there? A mechanical component that cannot be disabled simply by pulling a fuse. i know you can disable ABS by pulling a fuse but never heard that the AWD can do the same. Can someone with some technical expertise/knowledge/previous experience please clarify this for me? Thanks

The first gens had a fuse that you could pull to prevent the transfer case from engaging iirc.

As far as I know, no such beast exists for the newer cars. Although this car is rear-biased, and unless you turn on the "snow" mode, the car is 100% rwd after 12mph. So you basically have the best of both worlds... An awd car that turns into rwd when you lean on it. :-)

The X system can go up to 50% / 50% anytime it senses slip... in either mode.
When in Snow Mode, the car's throttle response is altered, making it much easier to start out without wheel spin.
Why would you buy an X and then want to disable it to race. The track times are close and i suspect the RWD may only be slightly quicker because of the extra drivetrain weight in the X. You can't dump the extra weight by disabling the AWD.

I wouldnt want to disable it, except maybe to get rid of a set of tires quickly. I was just curious, and know a lot of ppl prefer the RWD on a track, so assumed thats why it would be possible to even do.

I believe that the system is RWD until it starts to slip, am i correct in this? Such as, if going through a hairpin on the throttle, and you feel the tail kick out a bit, if i stay on the gas, will the fronts engage and "pull" me out of the slide? Anyone verify if this is how it works?

correct me if im wrong but ive heard/seen that the X may actually be slightly faster (.1) on the track due to slightly better traction

I've seen a few people post about taking their S to the track, but I don't think anybody has gone to the same track with an X. But I suspect they're close... the weight difference is minimal (200 lbs if that?) and the traction at the front probably helps. Then again, I don't think it's easy to pre-load an X like you would a Sport to get a better launch, but would you need to?

On autocross it's another story... I would suspect that a car with neutral steer like the X even with VDC off would be harder to manage when actually pushing it around corners. A fully RWD car you can always force by inducing power oversteer, since you know the front is not gonna do anything "weird" on you. But with ATTESA, who knows what the hell the car would do when you start flinging it around.

But at the end of the day I'm perfectly happy with my X though... it snows and I don't care, and when it's dry it's a blast.

I just purchased an 08 G35x. It did not show the tire upgrade but the salesman noted that the wheels and tires had been changed and he wasn't sure why (just noted that it added to the dealer's cost of the car but since he had not quoted me that cost (I was buying at invoice) he would not pass on to me.

Anyway, when I got home (I got the car late in the day and I had to run for a dinner engagement so I did not check it out that day) the next day, I noticed that I had the 18" rims with Summer tires; however, they are the standard G35 upgrade set not the x upgrade where the tires are the same all around. Will this be a problem (not having matching tire sizes)? The tires are Split 7 spoke 18x7.5 225/50R18 Front and 18x8.5 245/45R18 rear W rated tires. I see that the standard upgrade for the AWD is the Split 7 spoke 18x7.5 225/50R18 front and rear V rated all weather.

The question of running staggered on AWD has been asked since the beginning of time -- seriously, there are drawings in caves and stuff.

I posted a thread about it myself and it went unanswered, and most others are full of rumors and hearsay.

However the way I see it is, Nissan PUTS non-staggered rims on the X, so you should run non-staggered. I don't know if it's gonna break anything, but if it does, they could go back and say "oh, it's because you're using this" and try to stick you for it.

Not to mention that if you didn't get all seasons and you have to deal with inclement weather, then you definitely should.

Thanks for the information. I just had found the tech thread on the issue after I posted. In any case, I thought I was getting a deal as I wasn't charged for the 18" rims and W rated tires but if it will damage the car it isn't worth what I paid for it.
