Maintenance required battery...

Sorry not sure if I'm posting this under the right section.

So I walk up to my car and attemp to unlock with remote, completely dead. Then after I get the hood popped and jump the batter with cables I'm at a lost as to why the batter would be dead with 36k on the ticker. I didn't leave any lights on etc. Grab the manual and realize the G is equipped with the maintenance/water required battery. Is it me? Or is it really old school to have a battery that requires water in such a newer model car? I had no idea the G came with that type of battery.

It's not that old school, sealed bats suck because they are throw away, I would rather be able to add a little water then buy a new one

Are they suppose to have some performance significance? Do they last longer? I'm just curious as to why we would have a maintenance battery. I've had a CRX, Civic, GSR and TL-S and none of them had a maintenance required battery. Just thought it was weird.
