Howdy to the SoCal G35 crew. Wondering if some of you may be interested in an extended drive through Palomar/Laguna/PineValley and back with some of the local 350Z and possibly a few others (S2K, WRX, etc.)? Definitely a drive for those that love to drive, some excellent twisties and beautiful mountain high scenery.

If you are interested, let me know via replying to this thread here on G35Driver.com. Would be great to get a good mix of cars for this drive. This drive will take most of the day due to the distance, lots of fun sections we will be driving through.

9/20/03 Sat Palomar/Laguna/PineValley Drive

Hey All, we've had 5 or so drives around Palomar...time to do something a bit different. I'll lead a group through an extended drive, visiting a lot of new territory while still getting in some of our favorite twisties near Palomar Mountain. This is definitely a meet for those that like to drive the twisties and get a lot of beautiful scenery in, mountain high views, woods, etc. In my humble opinion...I think the curves around Palomar are the best in California.

We'll meet at the Gas Station on 76 near the Pala Casino at 11154 Highway 76 (East of the 15 about 5 miles). Meet around 9AM 9/20/03 Saturday, we will leave at 9:30AM sharp to head up the mountain.

We will head East on 76, then take S6 (S Grade Road) to Mother’s Kitchen/Palomar Mountain General Store for a quick break, from there some excellent twisties as we wind our way on S7 (E Grade Road) back to 76. Then quickly hopping off 76 to Center Loop/Mesa Grande (this road defines what a curve is) which drops us out on 79 and on to another familiar break at Dudleys Bakery in Santa Ysabel.

Then the new part begins.

We will continue on 78/79 through Julian then follow 79 to Sunrise Highway S1 and to the Laguna Mountains. We will have a short break at the Laguna Mountain Lodge/Store then drive down the mountain via Sunrise Highway, hop on Old Highway 80 and stop to have lunch in Pine Valley at Majors Coffee Shop (a hole in the wall with some interesting decorations). After lunch, we head back the way we came heading north back to Laguna/Julian/Santa Ysabel and through the twisties of Palomar. The drive ends once back at 76 and 15. If we start at 9:30AM, will probably finish around 4PM.

Sounds interesting how is the road condition? Is it all asphalt or will there be dirt road as well? Just curious I want to know what I'm getting myself into before I commit.

It's all asphalt. Typical mountain type road, very good condition roads, just lots of twisties and excellent scenery.

 

Looks like we are getting a good group of cars together, hopefully a few more G35 can show. Looks like 5-10 350Z, some WRX, 10+ BMW (many M3), misc. others. Good group of cars and car owners to run with.

Got some directions to the meet location below. Feel free to use www.mapquest.com to help get yourself there also. As for the drive directions, I'll have handouts when we meet.

Directions to Meet Place (Please show up around 9AM, drive starts exactly at 9:30AM Saturday 9/20):

We will meet at the Gas Station on Hwy 76 right next to the Pala Casino at 11154 Highway 76 (East of the 15 about 5.5 miles). The Casino and gas station is on the Right. The Gas Station is right before the casino. It is hard to miss the Casino as it is huge and has a few big flashing signs. I’ve got directions below:

From LA/OC near Hwy 5: Take 5 South to Hwy 76 which you take for about 23 miles East total (you will cross the 15, then about 5.5 miles later reach our meeting place). As this freeway has many stop lights, it takes a little bit longer to travel as the 23 miles suggests.

From LA/OC near Hwy 15: Take 15 South to Hwy 76 which you take for about 5.5 miles East.

From San Diego: If near Hwy 8, take 8 to 15, take 15 North, then take Hwy 76 East for about 5.5 miles.

From San Diego/North County: Hwy 78 to 15 N to 76 E is a good route to the meet location.

Final update, weather in the mountains where will be driving is going to be perfect! Nice and sunny. So if you can make it and get out of the fog/clouds near the coast, please join us. Looks like we are going to have 20-30 cars, good mix of 350Z, BMW, WRX, etc.

We usually do something every month or two. Should be something coming up in mid October with a lot of S2K and BMW and Zs.
