New Rims?
New Rims?
Those of you who have the sedan with 18s-what is the ride like? Is it harsh, taught, kinda rough or pretty much the same. I know there should be some difference but how much? I really want to put some SSR GT3s but I am really afraid to screw the ride quality up. My Dad has a 350Z and it beats the $hit out of you just puttin' along. I have along commute on fridays. I leave the bay area and go to Butte county up north. Nor-Cal/Bay Area people know the nightmare I face. So can anyone give me their thoughts?
Thanking you in advance.

Re: New Rims?
The G35 has softer suspension then the 350z, so going to 18's shouldn't affect you as bad....
You will probably notice a little stiffer ride, but not much... also you will notice that when you drive down imperfect roads, you car will have a bit more tendacy to follow the grooves in the road.. but you will probably only notice this on really bad roads...

Re: New Rims?
I have 19"s with 245/40's on them. I also have the sport suspension. The ride noise and quality wasn't really that affected by the change, believe it or not. The major difference is that you will have to pay more attention to the car following any kind of rut in the road. You will have to make many more slight steering corrections to stay straight.
However, the benefits to cornering, stopping, etc., as well as the improved look outweighs any cons for me.

Re: New Rims?
Thanks for the info on the rims. Did you notice any drop in performance? BTW I put a K&N into the 350Z last night with a part number ending in a 2 not a 1 DO NOT DO THIS fi you can help it. It fit but after some work on the filter with a razor blade. It want to pop out when put in the tray.We think its worth it though, now the Z hisses just slightly. We likes!!

Re: New Rims?
Pep Boys or Kragen...Nissan Dealers if you want to pay thier price. Look in the tech section there is a long story of the K&N and thats where I got the part number. The filter is for a 99 G20t. Apparently it fits most all Nissan motors...well sort of. If the one you get pops out of the tray-cut slots in the sides to match the internal ribbing. Hope all goes well and your Dyno run gives us all more HP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: New Rims?
i dont get it. why do larger rims make the car more liable to follow the ruts in the road?

Re: New Rims?
I like the look of the 18s. I think it balances the car-by that I mean looks not performance. I am really asking people if it is worth the cost and what are the draw backs besides the cost. I might just get Superleggra's in 17.

Re: New Rims?
I'm on 245/35/20's and believe it or not the difference in ride is barely noticeable. As someone else mentioned, the handling is much sharper and more precise though. The pro's outweight the con's, even if you're just going in it for the looks...

Re: New Rims?
35 series and you didnt notice much difference?!? When I drove my friends Maxima with 35 series tires, heres what I noticed:
1. Loud Road Noise
2. Ride was somewhat stiffer (nothing major, but was noticeable)
3. You had to keep both hands on the steering wheel to keep it from tracking on bad roads...
For those of you who want to get bigger rims... My suggestion is not to get anything bigger then 18" with 45 series tires.. anything less then 45 series tires and you will start to notice a decrease in ride comfort... And being you bought the car for its higher scale comforts, it doesnt really make sense to make it feel like a civic... but that is just my opinion..
Oh yea, for those asking why getting bigger rims cause your car to track on bad roads is because of several reasons...
1. Only tires that fit big rims like 19" rims are high perfomance and so they stick to the road more then stock tires
2. Aftarmarket rims are usally 1"-2" wider then stock rims, so you have more rubber on the road
3. Most aftermarket rims are designed to fit several brands of cars, thus they take a average offset for all the different types of cars and use it on the rims... the further away you are from the stock offset, the more you will notice tracking..
Hope that helps...

Was your friends Maxima lowered? Did your friend have his car properly aligned? Did your friend have cheap tires? Remember, I'm on 20's and my car is bone stock (no Sport Suspension). Trust me, I had a lowered Z and a late model Z28 and my G rides MUCH quieter and MUCH smoother than both of those two. There's no way I would spend this much on a car and have to keep two hands on the wheel....

Re: New Rims?
He had a 1.2" drop, but even with that the ride was not bad... As far as his tires goes, he had Pirelli's ($250 ea.).. I've been in several cars with 35 series tires and the road noise has been pretty bad in all those cars... that said, i've never been in a G35 with 35 series tires... So i'll take your word for it...
Be cool to have 20" rims with no bad side effects... but i'd defintatly have to ride in a G35 with 20" rims before buying them, being everyone has different opinions on whats acceptable and whats not...
But thanks for your input... In the past I would of never considerd getting 20" rims, but since you said there are no bad side effects to it, i'll definatlly consider it now...

I'll be honest with you, I originally wanted 19's (so I could go with a 40 series tire)when I was looking for wheels, but I couldn't find any 19's in chrome that I liked, so I bit the bullet and went with 20's. My fear was the same as yours, a rough ride. But I haven't regretted my purchase on bit! I'm VERY thankful I got 20's. The wheels look fantastic(I'm constantly getting compliments), were actually cheaper and more readily available than 19's, you have more of a choice in both wheels and tires, and you don't have to lower your car. The ride is great. Still, if you have any doubts, it's a great idea to take a ride first. As I said before, theres NO WAY I would pay 30+k for a car that rides like a skateboard!
