1) does anybody have the dimenions of the stock 17'' rims?

1)America's Tires states the rims are 17x7
2)America's Tires states 265 is the widest.
3)Don't know if I trust them.
4)But thats what I was told when I called.

Check the tire specs from the manufacturer's website. According to www.bridgestonetire.com, the Pole Position S-03 specs show varying minimum rim widths depending on the dimensions of the tire. For a 17x7, they don't seem to have anything wider than 225. The widest tire for this model on a 17" rim is a 265/40R17, and it wants a minimum 9" wide rim, recommend 9.5". The 285's don't come on rims smaller than 18". This is just one model from one manufacturer. Take a look at the specs of what you're interested in. If you search for your tires on tirerack.com, click on the Specs link for a particular tire, and it'll show you the rim width range for each size in that model. Also, I'm not sure how much play there is between what the manufacturer says is the minimum width and what the practical minimum width would be.. they may artificially deflate the range for liability reasons.

The Tire Rack is a great source. I would call them because I have gotten answers over the phone that differ from their website.

sedan rims are 17x7
coupe rims are 17x7.5/17x8

 

The fatest tire you can put on the factory 17's without effecting the speedometer much are:

17x7.5 front = 245/45YR17
17x8 rear = 255/45ZR17
