It's the plastic piece. Check to make sure it's secured all the way in the back. I used to have that piece off all the time messing with stuff, and sometimes I'd either forget to hook it in the back or it would just fall down, and I'd catch my toes on it. 10.5 shoe here too.

 

take off the plastic piece? i wear a size 14 and have never experienced that problem.
