Amateur ?...Coilovers???

Can someone please explain these to me, and what is the difference between them and getting shocks/springs?

Thanks in advance

Well a very notable difference would be the fact that you can adjust the ride height of the car using a special wrench provided with the coilover kit. I can't give a techy answer but thats pretty much the biggest difference.

Vin gets you off to a good start.
The coilover kits involve two primary components, a damper or strut piece and then the springs that go over it. You can customize the stiffness of the suspension through your choice of springs and dampers, as well as lower the height of the car from the ground. Depending on the kit you may have to make adjustments to the camber to keep the wheels properly angled to the road. Not doing so can result in abnormal tire wear and handling deficiencies.
However, you can also adjust the damping force of the suspension, which is even more significant for performance. Some of these damping force adjustments require a few minutes with tools. Some are adjustable through the use of an electronic control unit at the touch of a button. A proper selection of coilovers for your car can provide increased comfort and ride quality as well as performance returns. A bad choice will loosen your fillings and promote purchase of large quantities of Preparation H.

Re: Amateur ?...Coilovers???

i am going to take an attempt at it. here it goes.

coilovers is a complete kit. the shock and the spring. the spring and the shock work together as the shock response to the spring tension. basically the spring tension rate matches closesly to the shock thereby give better response to road. also most coilvoer kit also come with pillow ball mount. this is so that when the car corner, it won't lose control and steering response. the factory come with a plastic type that can easily flex if the car is corner very hard.

if you replace the spring and keep the factory shock. your ride might not be very confortable. you have to find a nice perfect spring to match the shock. some spring are very stiff and since the shock is softer, then you will have a very bumpy ride. It's very hard to find the right combo of spring and shock together.

please someone with an in depth knowledge correct if i am wrong.
